best swap for a DA
most people would say a gsr swap. but i don't think the b16 would be a bad swap either. i drive a 90 ls with a b16 swap and i like it.
B18B's if you plan on some boost I've seen done with great success..
B20b/z's if you want to keep the engine stock..
B18C if you want NA goodness and live in cali and can't use truck motors..

if u make that a b20 vtec that **** will fly i've seen sti's and evos get smoked by a DA with a b20 vtec...once that **** hits 3rd its so fast

im thinkin about that now ...B20's are really cheap and i Kno when u make that vtec its hella fast...i dont need diff motor mounts do I?
i have seen some shitty engines come from them and they are alot of money i got my b20b from attarco for 470 shipped
if u are in and around sacramento u can try venus they have good prices to i have got a jdm gsr from the and it was super clean just your choice were u want to get it

I would say H22 with a B16 or gsr tranny, you will be fast as anything around you will be right there with sohc turbo civics, and its smog legal in cali, plus only costs about 3500 so the rest is for improvements.... H2B
If you're thinking of going with the B18C, it might be easier for you to do the B17 swap instead, seeing that it is an engine that already came in the DA's so wiring might be a bit easier, if you can find one, otherwise I totally say go with the B18C!
So many people say that the LS is the way to go because if you want to turbo and yadda yadda, and true, the LS can hold more boost and make more torque stock, but if you don't know where you're going yet, the B18C is a better investment. A B18C can easily be set up for turbo and run just as much if not more boost if you just threw some different pistons in there! Maybe even type-r or better rods and ARP head studs too!
I wouldn't go with the H22.... Too much work involved in the swap, and its heavy. It's like driving with a fat chick on your hood and the axle angles get all weird unless you get an H2B swap which is super pricey... Not worth it IMO
Good luck!

Sorry! I just read the posts more closely and realized you wanted to probably go all motor!
I would say definately then, I would shoot for a VTEC engine. Now, with the B20VTEC, if you're going to be revving a B20 up to 8k and above, you're going to want to buy some better connecting rods!!! I would also boost up the compression with some high compression pistons too while you're at it if you catch my drift
. As for the transmission, I would probably get a GSR transmission and outfit it with a Type R final drive and an LSD, too, to make the most of your power and get it all on the ground. That would be a GREAT way to start an NA setup!
Plus, since the B20's are so cheap, you should be able to afford a VTEC head, rods, and pistons and still come out about the same as you would for a more expensive swap... and have gobs of power to go around.

I say full type-r swap if you don't really want to hassle with building a motor and want something reliable... Might not be the quickest choice with what you can do for 5k but it's reliable and it's already a mildely built factory motor with lsd tranny with better gearing... Plus you could also upgrade parts later as well... Can't go wrong with a b18c gs-r swap either if your not sure what you want to do in the long run cause you can go boost or all motor if you build it right.. For a DA though, I'd try and get a b17a gs-r just cause that's what DA gs-rs came with.. Also, why not try a k20a swap? Has anyone ever done that in a DA before? Anyway, with 5k you have a lot of options..

WRONG, it weighs like 10 to 20 lbs more then his current engine if that and 200 easy to wheels makes up for that i think plus its not expensive at all, engine and tranny for 1400 to 1600 all day on any site, and if plug and play and easy wiring is to much work then you need to not be on here giving bad advise, the most it would cost for a shop to install it would be 4k

yea ive heard of k20's in DA's but u loose your powersteering.....im thinking i like the sound of the b20 cuz when i pull that out im also doing the auto to manual swap
nah dont go b20, i kno dats gonna be ur daily driver but when u get cought with dat shiet, they wont let u have a SUV motor in a coupe.
ls-v more torque
b18c reliable strong motor.
c5 Big dogg in da B series game.
b16 are played out.
k20 not worth da trouble
b17 original GSR so u wont have a problem droping it in, and state reffing + smog.
i would stick with b series. and u can use alot of ur LS shiet while doing da swap. mounts, harness, distributer, alternator.
just wanna brag real quick,
i picked up a 97 B18c1 complete for 1,500 with only 130k miles.
gonna re build and replace the internals with ITR. basicly poor mans type r.
