Comptech I/H/E - My Thoughts
Hi all,
I just got the Comptech intake/icebox and 4-2-1 header installed a few weeks ago in addition to the Comptech catback exhaust. Car is a 1999 black gsr. I thought maybe this "review" would be a helpful addition to the forum.
My opinion of the comptech i/h/e system has been overwhelmingly positive so far. I currently drive the car 160 miles/day for my daily commute to work, and I noticed quite a difference after I had the system installed. Comptech lists a 20 whp gain via a dynochart, and they may not be too far off their claims. I personally haven't dynoed my car but the butt (or money if you will) dyno definitely confirms a noticeable power increase. The sound is also really awesome; these are the only components I've changed out on the car (minus suspension) and I really love the sound the comptech I/H/E system makes. The intake is really only loud at higher rpm's, well past the vtec engagement point. The thinner header piping allows you to hear some engine whine at idle. And for people interested in getting a "quiet" exhaust, comptech's cat back exhaust is definitely NOT for you, although it is still quieter than most aftermarket exhausts out there. Comptech fit and finish is top class.
What is the only bad thing about comptech's I/H/E? Well for one thing I think the price is certainly restrictive. All in all I paid about $1200 for the icebox, intake, header, and catback exhaust.
Why spend the extra money? Comptech claims their system gives more of a smooth power gain. The only ultimate advantage comptech has is with their icebox design. It functions as a cold-air intake but doesn't have the danger of hydrolocking. AEM does make a bypass valve BUT the bypass valve reduces the power gains on the AEM CAI (something they don't really like to mention). It's still tough to justify the additional cost but the fact that comptech parts don't void warranty should reflect on the quality of their products.
Well I hope that was a useful review.

icebox still hydrolocks!! Yellow Type R had tons of pics of not so nice damage to the engine on honda-tech, but the last time I said this, some member added by saying that Comptech apparently replaced his motor.
Just make sure you are still careful with ANY cold air, open element, etc type exhaust.

Hi all,
Just got the GC's and koni yellows so I can't give a good review of them yet (shocks are set on lowest setting right now for break-in purposes). No sound clip or video yet; as soon as I can get my digital camera/camcorder to work with my computer I'll have them up along with some tasty pictures
Yeah icebox still hydrolocks but comptech says it "won't hydrolock" on their website so if you lose an engine they're liable to replace it.

How much did you pay for your comptech products and where did you get them? Best prices I've found is ethier IPS or DiabloAutosports.com. Every plan on dynoing your car with the current i/h/e setup you have? It'd be nice to see how much actual whp you've gained.
btw: Thanks! for the review.

If your in enough water to hydrolock your motor with the Ice box then your motor is shot anyway,I drove threw over a foot of water in the rawest down poor I've seen in years with no problem at all.
I agree I have the Ice box and header,
Is all I can say for comptech stuff,I just don't like the catback,it gives the ride a nice power gain however it looks

I'm runnin the full Comptech setup on my R and am more than happy with it. Puts out great power throughout the RPM range and makes a great engine note. I love how it sounds. Deep and rumbly and the VTEC changeover isn't annoyingly loud like with the AEM CAI. If you can afford it, you can't go wrong with Comptech.
nice review, I would like to go with all comptech parts also. Still debating if i should go with the jdm 4-1 header or go for a 4-2-1 comptech header...any suggestions?
The comptech 4-2-1 produces slighty more WHP then the JDM 4-1,on an ITR,which has a single stage mani and a 8400 rev limit. And had no drop off at hight rpm's,if your going all out and puttin in Jun's,toda's,or some raw dogg cams go with a good 4-1.
Does anyone have video/sound clip of the comptech exhaust? I've NEVER been able to find one. I know when I finally get mine this summer I'll have to make a clip or some kind.
Thanks for the review! I have a TIG 4-2-1 on my GSR and have nothing but good things to say about it! Definitely
My next purchase will be an ITR sway bar setup...then the biggie-->Comptech Catback.
I love Comptech's craftsmanship and quality products. I acn't wait to get my exhaust!

RuskeR:
I actually got all the work done at Diablo Autosports. I would highly recommend this place to others
Again, not entirely sure about the power differences between the MIG and TIG welded headers...
What are the advantages of the JDM 4-1 header versus other aftermarket 4-1 headers? It seems like a lot of people are choosing the JDM 4-1 over aftermarket ones.

comptech products (header and exhaust) are great for basic bolt on performance.....
i went the 'hard ko' NA route so i ditched all the comptech stuff..
Untuned, with toda b's and stock CR
i went from 158whp (with comptech header and exhaust)
to 174whp with the addition of a JDM 4-1 header and 2.5" custom exhaust
bottom line, comptech has 'nice looking' products that are great for basic bolt on performance. oh yeah, and GREAT sound
