thanks all...turns out ipods have built in volume limiters. I had to deactivate the limiter and then raise the volume....voila...music. The solution came from my honda dealers' service dept. And the info was free.

 

right infront of our faces the whole time... we were getting too technical and forgot to look at the obvious facts then? lesson learned
