ok so i was looking at my owner's manual, and it was saying that the gsr engine takes the 91 octane gas but can take 87 and "compensate" for the lower octane? how does it compensate? and would the lower octane damage the engine over time?

And yes it does your engine does perform less efficient with the lower octane

 

why would it damage??is not a motor oil..that cause detonation when not change regularly for long period of time.higher octane outputs high perfomance on the motor..lower octane more effiency..example like vtec kick harder with 92octane and less on 87 octane.

 

i'm exploring options since gas prices are going up like crazy and money is getting tight.

i noticed using premium gas, i get more mileage per gallon, but when using lower octane i seem to lose about a gallons worth of miles.

my driving style differs from time to time, but i consistently get better mileage with higher octane gas.

 

im gonna be honest with you, if your gonna whine about high gas prices then sell your car and get something else. idk why people complain about paying an extra couple of bucks to fill up their tank with higher octane fuel. we dont drive the greatest cars but it is somewhat of a privilege to own a gsr, itr, si or type S etc. if your gonna be that much of a tight wad just sell it and buy a hybrid

He is exactly right. You spend what, an extra 2-3 dollars. Big deal.

What will be a big deal is when your motor starts pinging and we have a thread in here with you complaining about a noise saying "what is this strange cracking noise coming from my motor when i step on it"

 

The knock sensor will retard the timing when it detects detonation. A little too late if you ask me. USE 91 .

 

i put regular gas in my gsr but only at chevron and shells. to me,it runs the same as 91 octane.however when i put regular at am pm and other gay gas stations it doenst run all that good.. smooth,,hahaa.thats my opionion

As you should.

Lower octane in a GSR-&gt;knock sensor detection of knock-&gt;retarded ignition timing-&gt;lower MPG-&gt;you lost power and didn't save any money at all

Run premium.

 

x2 to all, you can detonate with lower octane.

one thing though that ive heard... if your on a road trip or somthing and your just gonna cruise, without ripping it on the on ramp, or passing traffic, you could be alright using 87.

however no, it is not GOOD for your motor.

 

i would never use anything but premium on my car, such a great car should get nothing but the best.

Just got my '93 GSR and was wondering the same thing the OP was. I guess Premium is the way to go.

 

what about if you have E85 pumps?

 

Do not use anything under 91 Octane...trust me...you will lose performance and over-time your car will start to have problems.

 

you cheap ****! Use 91 for your gsr or get an ls and go 87. its like 10 cents more per gallon if your gonna cheap out get an ls or a civic save yourself gas money.

 

DON'T use E85, except in cars that were designed or modified to accept it. Which means, DON'T use E85 in an Integra.

 

Okay so let me get this straight...
87 is bad for the motor and will cause future problems
91 is the way to go on a stock GSR
87 doesn't save you any money because it knocks, so timing is retarded, therefore bad MPG

I put 93 in my GSR because that is what premium is here in Texas. I recommend to the OP to get a second car running on 87 as a daily driver and taking the teg out on weekends if gas prices are a problem.

 

Scratch the first one. Your car will run like poo with the 87.
