Default First Time on Slicks

I'm going to try slicks this year for the CRX. Given that my ride height in the front limits me to a 23" tall wheel/slick combo, I plan on using M&H 8.5/23.0-15 with my Kosei 15x8 wheels. The wheels have a +22 offset so everything should fit just right. My concern is if the stock axles will be able to handle that slick size. I'm currently using an LS tranny, stock diff and axles. B18c1 motor. I plan to launch at low boost (350whp) and then hit the switch to high boost (400whp, 331tq) at third gear. I'm still searching around here and it seems the stock axles should be fine with some preload at the staging light and do a 2nd gear burnout. Not sure what tire pressure to run yet though. I also see that M&H has 7.5/23.0-15 slicks so which of the two sizes would be better/safer for my set-up?

M/T's grip better, but I don't think your ready for that yet.

If I were you, I'd run them at 10-12psi at first to get a feel for them. Then begin to lower the pressure as you feel the need.

The 8.5 should be ok.

Remember you don't want to brake anything.

PS bring a spare right side axle with you.

You could bring a spare set of axles with you, but if your not a shocker, you wont break a stock axle, id be more worried about that diff with that power coming out of the hole, especially on a 23 inch tire where the possiblitly of overpowering them and wheelhopping can become a reality rather quick.

Hello mrchris1979,

I would go with the M&H 8.5/23-15, they go on a 8"x15" wheel. The M&H 7.5/23-15 go on a 6"x15" wheel.

GOOD LUCK and be SAFE mrchris1979.

Breaking an axle is the last thing I want to do, especially since I will be driving to the track and still want to drive it home afterwards. What's the best advice you guys have in terms of preventing the axles from breaking. Starting to get nervous now

breaking your axle or diff with that power can happen, just bring tools for changing an axle when you go.

Agreed just bring an extra axle and just hope you dont break the diff......you should be ok though like 92si said start with a little more pressure in the tires untill you feel like your comfortable on them then lower the pressure and have a blast....last weekend at the track stock axles 23x8x13 7psi 8500rpm launch all day and drove to work on monday...its do able just learn your car

just ease off the clutch at a low rpm first. then go a lil higher if your bogging really bad. i launch mine at 5k and cut low 1.7s weak i know, but ive made over a dozen passes on the same axles

i have 3 seasons on the SAME stock axles. 1 year N/A b16. 7k launches. 1 year on spray, 281/220, 7k launches(22x8 M&H), and 1 year boosted 435whp 7k launches ~9psi boost on the 2-step (25x8.7). its all in how YOU drive as to whether the axles hold up.

Do slicks with taller sidewalls such as 23x8x13 have an advantage over shorter sidewall slicks such as 23x8.5x13? I can consider getting some 13" Diamond Racing wheels if so.

IMO, YES, the more sidewall, the more wrinkle and grip you get. but thats just my opinion

like garage 808 hatch said the more side wall the more wrinkle which will be more traction. I would say go lensos if u have the money. I got a killer deal on mine with 22" m/h slicks with 4 passes on them. But if not get 13" diamond racing wheels. I may be sending them one of my lensos to get a custom steel wheel made for street driving in a 13x7.5 to fit over my da spindles.

Preloading is pretty much taking the slack out of the drivetrain in order to reduce shock. Generally, you would pull up on the E-brake, let out the clutch a little and give it a bit of gas,so things tighten up.
