Spun a rod bearing on my 99 civic si B16A2 and am planning a rebuild. Crankshaft journal where bearing spun is kinda scarred up and I'm planning on taking the crank and rods to a machine shop and have the journals machined down and polished to a standard bearing size.

Any idea if there is a minimum amount of material you can remove from the journals and maintain the integrity of the setup. I looked through the service manual and couldn't find anything. Am I going down the right path or should I just buy a new/used crank and rods?

 

Well if you take material off, i thought that means you go up in bearing size to oversized one .010, ect.. If the rods+crank isnt damaged i would use them, but a micropolish job on the crank never hurt anyone. I would look into why the spun, lack of oil pressure maybe?

 

Yeah - I had just bought the car, and it must've been burning oil because when the bearing spun and the rod started knocking I got the car home and drained the oil - was ~3 quarts low. So I'm basically an idiot - but will be doing the rings while I'm in there so hopefully the oil consumption will be fixed.
