yes you have to remove the door panel to get to the speakers. make sure you remove all the screw before prying. once the screws are removed, you have to remove the clip that holds the window handle. you can use a small flat head screwdriver or buy the clip remover (at any part store). once that has been removed it's prying time.
when prying, don't go to crazy, pry gentle and every will be fine.

somehow i thought that what was stuck it was the handle that opens the door!!! ok.. damn i was about to yank the panel...
well i thought it would be like that but the new set of speakers i got they are too long but same size in diameter, but the problem is that it hits the base where the stock speaker is seating!!! i dont know if i should cut the section where the stock speaker magnet seats or just take the whole base out but to do so i need to remove the door panel.... any comments welcome... thanks for the help...
lol 6 1/2 is the size for the lower door speakers. If you are replacing the 6 1/2s dont take the door panel off. Its alot of work for no good reason. The speaker cover over the 6 1/2 just prys off, like with a flat head or hell i just used my fingers the other day when i was installing some speakers.

Well, the factory speakers are flush mounted...you can make trim rings (or if your speakers came with some use them) and mount the speakers to the door panel. I had to do this on my old Escort cuz the mounting depth was too great.
