Default Key ?

The 02' Odyssey we got this weekend only came with one key. I went to Walmart to get a key made and they said it had an encoded chip and they couldn't copy it. I don't see a chip on the metal part of the key is there one in the plastic portion? We have a remote keyfob fot it as well. Can a duplicate key at least be made for when the wife leaves her keys in the van to open the doors? If encoded with a chip, how much to get another key made from Honda?

Yes, the key has an embedded chip. You can cut a copy, but it would only be usefull for unlocking the doors or glove box. You'd have to call a dealer near you for the cost of getting a duplicate key.

If you want to take your chances, get several copies of your key cut at wallymart and tape or mount the original key somewhere near the ignition cylinder in a hidden location. This of course defeats the purpose of the imobilizer chip, but you have to decide if saving a few bucks on the key is worth the risk.

Thanks, as long as a regular key will open the doors, I feel better. I'll try to call Honda tommorrow, to get a definite price.

be carefull if you try to put your original key near the key cylinder if the key is picked up by the imobilizer it may not let the multiplex system "sleep" which will cause a current drain and a not so happy wife with a dead battery
