use your hands... The mechanical stuff can cause swirl marks if you dont do it right. So can hands but its easier to do it with an orbital...

Everybody's got their own way to do it. There have been recent threads about this topic as well. Me personally...

Hand apply
Hand remove
Orbital buff with sheepskin to a shine

Always by hand. Foam applicator to apply, white cotton bath towels to remove.

I have a Porter Cable 7424.
Still haven't used it yet!!!! Between rain, 90+ degree days, and too much OT at work...

Anyway, from what I understand, you can't make your car look as good by hand, and its much quicker and easier.

We'll see. I need to take a vacation day and check it out.

Listen to Garth. He detailed my R back in the day - this was after the 100-mile drive home

Ok, bear with me here.

I'm not familiar with these strange new concepts of a "clean" or "shiny" car, but I'd like to give it a try.

What kind of orbital buffer do you guys recommend?

I have a Craftsman professional myself. It does a great job, and has never given me any problems throughout the 5 years I've had it

Who am I kidding?

The money to buy an orbital buffer can be used to buy more mods instead.

Reid - who almost got sucked into caring about the way his car looks by these pretty boys...

Forgot to mention, the porter cable is the exact same as the mequiars. Mequiars just put their name on it and charge $225.00

The BEST random orbital buffer you can buy for your car is either the Porter Cable 7424 or 7336. If you order from Coastal Tool or Lowe's, you can get a great price of about $115 shipped for either product. You should probably invest in a velcro backing kit and some pads, which you can buy from Classic Motoring Accessories. http://www.autopia-carport.com. Griots garage sells the same machine with a vented backing plate for $199 plus shipping.

A random orbital buffer WILL not harm your paint any more than hand techniques, but will increase productivity tremendously. You will be able to easily remove swirls that would make your arm fall off with fatigue if you did it by hand. I would only use the random orbital for polishing with an abrasive product, but that is because the "wax" I use goes on so easy by hand and I would waste too much if I used a random orbital.

Yeah. Don't use a buffer for the claying.
