Advice on Purchase
Hey guys I checked out a car today that I would like advice on before I make an emotional choice.
It's a silver 2001 with 120,000 miles from a dealership (new car dealer, it was traded in by an old school teacher)
the car looks really good, aside from a couple small hard to see scratches. The clutch engages really high on the pedal, is this normal for the AP1? The brakes felt good, but not as strong as I would like, but i'm also driving around in a 2100 pound civic with GSR brakes at each corner, gsr brake booster and upgrade master cylinder, so i might just have high standards.
I'm aware of the gear popping issue, and the plastic rear window, but at the price i think its worth it. I want your opinions on this car for the price , and more importantly, what I should check at this mileage. If the car is still available tomorrow (I refused to sign the papers without sleeping on it, and someone else is showing interest in it tonight, so I might loose it) I will have a PPI done at the honda dealer and move on it if you guys agree.
price is 11,000 OTD (10K plus tax fees etc) At this price I can keep my civic which is setup for HPDE)
EDIT: Thats 10K plus tax and reg etc
Ideas? Thanks for any help guys!

I appreciate the advice. but $9500 OTD? they can get much more at auction for it. Thats obv not gonna happen. I realize the market is soft, but retail KBB is 15500 on this car, private party on both edmunds and KBB on this car is 11100 and 11900 respectively. (before taxes)
you really feel its not worth 11k OTD with a 3 month warranty???

11k after taxes, doc fees, etc. isnt a bad deal if the car is in great condition. 120k is nothing on a honda as im sure you already know. i would see if you can get them down a little bit but if not i think it is still a good deal.
p.s. modding a s2000 is a lot more expensive than modding a civic so keep that in mind

It's a Honda, so the engine and tranny should be good for ya few more miles yet.
All else looks all good - was the mileage mainly highway stuff?
You won't regret a Honda S2000 (unless you buy a lemon!) - they are no end of fun. Read heaps of forums in here to get an idea of problems to check for before purchasing...

ever dude.

it's a true story....
young kids saying:
"i have $10,000...should i buy an 05 civic w/ 20,000 miles.....or a 2000 s2000 w/ 150,000 miles?"
gaurantee 9 out of 10 buy the S...then proceed to rice the **** out of it
the high mileage, low cost s2k's are going to drag down ownership of the car as a whole

IT'S STILL NOT A ******* CIVIC
see what you did - you got me all angry
good side is that they will start bending them round trees all over the place, so the price should come back... The S kinda lures you in by driving like a regular 2.0, but then you hit VTEC on a corner for the first time - bam...

price seems fair for what it is. i would have the dealer do a compression test while you wait/watch and see what the results are. this engine should have over 230psi per cylinder.
i'm only saying because i bought my s2k used with 65k on it and at 70k my #2 cylinders' compression dropped to 120psi. (i got a new engine from honda but you never know...)
good luck!

you are forgetting that insurance on them is much higher than a civic and maintenance and modding the car also...so i dont think the car will become a civic yet...atleast not around here. the newest civic that anyone has riced out around here is like a 95 lol. people around here are all poor.....atleast in the tuning world. thats why people buy 240sx's which i HATE. however north raleigh is all rich people who just go straight to porsche gt3's and ferarri's

funny this would come up, i spent all of last week staying with a car dealer down in florida. he showed me prices on a lot of cars, several s2000s even, that he could pick up at that weeks auction. ap1's are almost sickening cheap at the wholesale (auction) level (not that they are that expensive at retail either.) that car probably bring about 7.5g at auction -being that old with so many miles.
this time last year when i started shopping for an S i saw a couple '01s w/ 100,000 asking price for 10k...so a year later and 20,000 more miles later should be a little less.
if 11k is ur budget i would probably try to buy an 02 or 03 w. glass rear window with around 90k(ish) on it from a private seller. think you'd be better off. check the classifieds on here. there always seems to be a plenty.
and remember, if you buy an s2000 you will probably end up driving it like you stole it... so the lower the millage the better. because the person(s) who owned before you also drove it like they stole it, too. and so did their friends. haha.

Hey I'm Eyal's friend... I think one major influence on the decision is that if he gets one for 11k or less, he can keep his Civic for HPDE/track, but if he spends more than that he's gotta sell it.
Aludew, can you really get an 02/03 for 11k with that mileage? The sellers really seem to be asking a LOT for them... I don't think too many sellers price these to move fast - probably because they don't mind driving them for a little longer, lol.

He lies, you can't.
I have been looking for three months across the United States, and I could not find a decent one under 15k. I wanted lower miles and a clean car that was not beat on. The resale of these cars is higher than blue book. Do an autotrader search and it is hard to find one at blue book price. From someone that looked at s2000's for awhile before I purchsed mine, I would say it is a good deal. You have to consider it is comming from a dealer so there is a slightly higher mark up apposed to a private party. If the car was truely babied, then that is another point. I would pay more for a car (1-2k more) if they had all the records to show everything was done on time, and also if the owner was an older guy/girl and the car was unmodified.

yeah hes definately exaggerating, i watch auctions online DAILY to see what the going rates are. both on clean and salvage title. for a good salvage title s2k you're looking at 8-10k. 10k is the low-end of a clean title s2k, my source is a friend who frequents the manheim auctions. Unless if this guy is going to live auctions I haven't heard of, there's no way you can get a clean title 02-03 in good condition for 11k.
I drove 1000 miles to get mine in mediocre condition for a bit over 9k. and that was 1car and almost a year later of searching.

No,
quick example:
http://www.hondamarketplace.co...62160
there's an 04 w/ only 27k on it w/ asking price of only $15.5, (money talks- i bet 14 would take it)
i don't think that makes 00's and 01's w/ 125k as an exciting deal for 11k. That dealer MAY have a little more wiggle room than you think. And there is NO WAY a private seller could get that...unless they found a buyer with more money than sense.
OP: remember, these cars are not exotics like people tend to think and not super expensive. IMO definately buy something w/ lower miles

Thats a salvage title car for 15,500...
I ended up getting the car for 10K out the door. ($9053) becuase the PPI shows that its still got the original clutch. I signed, and will be bringing it home soon. I'm very excited because I get to keep the civic for track, and keep this thing totally stock. So excited to daily drive a STOCK car!
