I would imagine because of the larger displacement in the 2.4L, this wouldn't work. Just my .02.

The O2 sensor element is essentially the same for all types. The difference is in the wiring... heated vs non-heated, etc. So, if the plug fits, it should work.

But as the exhaust flow would vary from each car, wouldn't that cause the o2 sensor to burn out prematuraly? I thought that's why they make them for each car. If every car could use the same oxygen sensor, why not just have one universal o2 sensor?

O2 sensors probably get contaminated more often than "burning out". Electrically they are similar in function, but there are newer wide band sensors that are used by some manufaturers. Early O2 sensors relied soley on the exhaust heat to get them hot so they could operate. To speed up the heating and reduce emissions sooner, manufaturers added heater circuits to the sensors.
There are physical differences in the "packaging" of the sensors. For example, a Bosch type generic is surrounded by a cage that is not as open as the OEM type. Some generics come with wire pigtails you need to connect to the stock plug.

So again, if the physical size is similar and the connector fits, it should work fine.
