Default B20 integras get smogged legally in california?????? wtf?

Hey there. i've been looking for integras online.. i keep seeing integras with b20 motors that claim to be smogged legally... that doesn't make sense.. i thought in california you could not do that because it is a light truck motor in a car..

what the hell?

Smogged - Yes, Maybe.
Legally - I dont believe so in California.

If you do buy it, you will just end up with more trouble than its worth.

u can find smog shops that cant tell the diff between the b18b and the b20b... which means they will hook it up to the sniffer and it will pass with flying colors.

the only exception might be if ur obd2 and u changed the ecu.

I got mine smoged the past 4 years and i just didnt mention i had a b20 and it passed both times.

NO you cant

If you get the old prelude engine (B20a5) i think, that came from a prelude and you shouldn't have any problems with that except that it is to old and you cant reff an older engine in a newer car.

yeah that makes sense.. to find a smog shop that can't tell the difference.
Forgive me if i'm wrong.. but going off hmotors.. a B20B looks JUST LIKE a 94-95 B18B with it's
non ridged valve cover, hmmmm.. but you're foiled if they look at the engine code.
And doesn't the intake manifold look a little different..

K forget it, just gonna get an LS and do a F2B or H2B like i planned ( eventually )

you are asking an unusual question

it will pass emissions legally

but it will not pass visual if the smog tech knows what he/ she is doing.

good buy w/ the 95 ls. the b20 would have gave you trouble. cops around here are getting smarter, and they look at the engine code. over here illegal smog from what i know of, if your car is illegally modded 150, if your car has an illegal motor 250+. not worth it

oooooh that'd be problems if you got caught though ( unlikely )

Your right, they cant pass smog they just cant. And people on craigslist post theyr car up with a b20 and an 09 sticker saying its smogged legally. In california it is illegal to have such a motor in a very light car, not even the 4 door integra can pass with a b20. PERIOD , who ever told you LIED to you .

yeah i figured the ads were bogus, but there are so many people selling b20 integras on craigs.. and i read this board religiously.. so i wanted to know if something happened recently i wasn't aware of

Makes me wonder though.. with lsvtecs... can you get away with those since the block code looks the same? like if you switched the valve cover and intake manifold..

The b20b and b18b are almost identical... their heads ARE identical. the only different on the bottom end is basically the bore size.. one is 1.8L one is 2.0L so physically it does look just like an LS engine.

I have smogged my b20 twice already without a problem...

Just find a small smog shop that doesnt have a ton of equipment.

I promise if they dont notice the b20b... (even if they do they probably wont know what it means) that as long as your engine is healthy it should pass with flying colors... I dont know where my test results are for my last one but i remmember none of the numbers were even close to failing.

But another factor is the year of your car. i have a 94 integra and the restrictions of the 94s are actually quite a bit less than the 95 integras. even though its just one year difference.... I think the only tegs that might have a big issue is the obd2 integras cause they just check the ecu on those and no sniffer test.... but then again that might just mean that the test is even easier for them to pass.....

But like i said. IT IS DOABLE.

Sounds doable. do you have a B20B, or B20Z?
One thing i gotta ask you though.. is it worth it?
Sounds like the hp is the same.. but torque comes in at lower rpm.

motor swaps are the norm now.

why be afraid of swapping a stock motor into your car?

take risks and have fun. you cant have fun worrying every day of your life.

BTW, i got the '95 for a reason
Last OBD1 year.. capability to swap in older engines..

They do run a sniffer on OBD2, but it is a lot easier to maintain smog equipment on an OBD2 car.. whereas on an OBD1 car it's kind of a mystery unless you really know your stuff.

After driving a few OBD2 hondas ( a civic and an integra ) i realized that those power losses were in the lower power band too.. which is where it hurts out little 4 bangers the most.

OBD1 FTW.

I would rather not have the legal hassle. When it comes to 4 cylinder motors, swap rules are friggin' retarded, but i would rather go F2B/H2B and bang on my chassis than pop a B20 in there and have to rip it out later. So one really does have to do a risk analysis.. in california anyways.

lol legal trouble. save your money and buy a car you wont fix up then.

chances of you getting caught with a b20 are slim. if you want to buy a b20, sell your car and buy a crv then boost it.
