I had a problem very much like this in my LS. I got a different distributor and the problem was solved. Sounds like you've already tried that route though.

a friend of mine suggested that maybe the plugs(pre-gapped ngk iridium IX)are gapped wrong but its a stock obd0 jdm b16...could pre-gapped plugs be the fault? i've used them before and they worked fine in previous years..thanx for your input
try some cheap copper ngk's first, they should only be about $3 a plug. Most likely a dizzy issue. if you had a si model before it was swapped you can cut one leg off the dizzy and it will work on the b16 head and you can see if its the problem that way. It will run ok with the si dizzy but you cant get the recomended advance. I think it will only get you 13-14 degrees or so before you run out of adjusment but you will be able to see if its the problem or not.

Dude I also have an RX7 it was doin the same thing. I changed my fuel filter and it stopped. Try that and see if it works. It didn't do that to a certain RPM, it was getting really crappy fuel, I changed it and haven't had a problem.

Does your rpm hit a cutoff at 6,000rpm? Like your rpm needle can't go past 6,000rpm. Did you do any cluster swaps? You can try and check your speed sensor cable. My CRX with a B16A couldn't rev past 6,000rpm. And my problem was the speed sensor cable. Hope you find out whats wrong with your ride.

I got a very similar problem., but mine won't run rite @ WOT.
Drives fine and idles fine, but @ WOT it falls on its face.
Have you checked your timing? Firing order? vac lines?

you need to check you fuel before you go and get a new dizzy. its cheeper and is sounds more like it is starving for fuel once it hits VTEC.
