Default who uses a filter on there turbo setup?

I have a frend of a friend who i plan to call, he lives in calli and has been running a revhard with just the screen on the turbo for over 4years and 120,000 miles. I was told he said that putting a filter on it really killed some power. I plan to call him tomorrow and see how this all goes for him. but who here runs one and what do you think are the +&-. thanks for the input

well if you get any dirt or a small rock in the turbo, its said to be enough to kill the turbo. i figure dirt and rocks cant be good for the turbo or the engine so i'd run with a filter.

I have a K&N on there right now but will probably change it a mesh of some sort soon. I've been told by the tuner that a filter on the turbo chokes the turbo a bit. He compared it to putting your hand on a vacuum cleaner (you know how it strains when you block the air).

What ever happened to that guy who had a screen shop or something and showed pics of three different types of mesh screens? I emailed him to see if I could buy some of that stuff but never got a response. I checked out my local Home Depot and they didn't have anything but fine screens. I want something stronger. Anyone know where I can pick one up?

That slight loss of HP is worth not losing a turbo due to debris or even water gettin in there. I have a K&N cone type filter on there and I made 277 whp @9 psi on a mustang dyno, so its obviously not taking away too much. I wouldnt risk it...

Yeah and an air filter chokes an NA engine too. I wonder why all those silly car manufacturers put air filters on there just to kill off a couple of horsepower for no reason

Sounds too risky for me. I'll spare the turbo and lose 1hp. I think it's worth it.

Wasn't there someone a couple months back who posted a picture of them running a screen and ended up chipping his compressor blades??? It looked pretty nasty..... Anyone have the picture??

Personally, I think losing like 1hp is better then having to risk replace your $500+ turbo.

It's not worth risking your turbo for a few ponies. Use Common Sense here.

The guy I bought the turbo kit off of 2 yrs ago had a screen. I later convinced him to get an air filter and dyno to see if he lost any hp, the funny thing was he had no hp gain, but gained 5ft/lbs of torque. I think the cooler weather played a big role, but it was only 8deg cooler than the previous dyno 3 months prior. I'll take 5ft/lbs and a safer turbo anyday.

how bout if you got one of those ram air style hoods and somehow routed the outside air directly to the cone filter? wouldn't that compensate/push more air into the restrictive cone filter? just a thought

No. The external air pressure relative to the filter would have to be greater than the pressure drop caused by the filter. While not that great, you would still need a signifigant amount of airflow to create that. The only "feasible", acceptable option is to go with the largest filter available. But what do I know, I'm one who voted for "no filter"

i am sure the scoop would have to take up most of the hood. because at 10psi you are moving a **** load of air.

I rigged a screen attatched to a length of dryer hose running from the passenger headlight housing (removed the light) right to the turbo for an even at Moroso, I then just slapped my regular dirty as sin $20 APCorwhatever filter back on there.. no difference whatsoever.. go figure
