always read the gauge in 32nds

if the tires come with 10/32 of tread as do a set of Bridgestone Potenza Tires i had and and i just sold them with 8/32 then i say they had 80% tread left.

Example: Azenis only come with 8/32 tread new and say you want to know what percentage they have left. If you measure it and it is 3/32 then you do 3/8 and that is the percentage. Maybe i am way off but that is how i look at it.

hope this helps.

haha! i guess i am just dumb...i still dont get it...some more questions to make things more confusing:

1. how do you know that, for example, bridgestones have 10/32? does it say it on the tire side wall?

2. how does 3/32 turn into 3/8?

thanks

1. I know it says somewhere about tire depth. Usually on the companies we-site for sure.

2. I dunno how he got that....

And about percentages

Ok say the tire has 10/32" of tread, thats 100%. 9/32" - 90%. 8/32 or 1/4" - 80% and so on....

come on man your post did not help my confusion one bit... i admitted in my post that it was my bad i was too dumb to read it. thats why im asking for help. i dont need you rubbing it in...i know about fractions and MM and whatnot...heres what i DONT get...

how does 10/32 equal 100%??? i thought 32/32 equals 100%...thats what i got out of elementary school

the reason i am asking all these questions is because i am selling my rims and i want to accurately tell the potential buyers how much tread is left on the tires. i bought a tread gauge and was getting all types of readings that didnt make sense TO ME...

anyway i kinda have an idea but still pretty ignorant...thanks to everyone that tried to help me i appreciate it

It's a simple proportion. At 10/32nds, you have 100% of the full tread depth possible, provided the depth when the tire is new is 10/32nds".

If you measured 6/32nds", then you have 60% of your tread depth remaining. In this case, 32/32nds" is 1" of tread. I don't even think Mickey Thompson's best mud tires have tread blocks that deep.

10/32 10 =100%
9/32 9 =90% This would be on a tire that comes with 10/32 to start with.

If the tire came with 8/32 from the factory then 8/32 8=100% of the tread.
So say u had 5/32 left on this tire. Then 5/32 5=62.5% left of tread.

exactly how we do it in our shop at work, and measure from the middle of the tire tread.. its really not that hard find out what it had brand new and measure what you got now..
