Default Oil Cap fell off & Ran dry on the dipstick, changed oil to recommended 3.8 Qts now overfilled!!

Hello,

It's been a hell of a two days for me!! I'm a pissed off camper right now!!
So please help me as my mind is exploding.

My problem Yesterday!

1st somehow my oil cap came off and oil sprayed everywhere. I think one of my friends was being stupid and was playing with the oil cap and left it loose. I checked my dipstick and there was no sign of oil after driving over 45 miles. I added 1 Quart and it went up to the half way filled mark, so I think there was still enough oil to prevent damage. What do you guys think?? damage possibly???

Current Problem:

So anyways since I added a different non synthetic and different weight oil in an emergency. I decided to go change it right away. I was tired when changing it and forgot to take the oil cap off to help drain it. So I'm thinking maybe extra oil was trapped somewhere and didn't drain. After letting it sit and drain, I prepped it and added 3.8 Quarts as recommended for a D16y8. Welp after running the engine and letting it settle, I discovered that it was over about 1/2 inch from the top dot.

Will this kill my seals or anything else??

I would have to drive another 27 miles to get it to where I can drain some out. Or should I leave it??

Sorry for the long story, I may be rambling but I'm stressed to the bone right now!

Thanx in advance!!

I've always been told overfilling is worse then being a little low, because you can blow the crank seals or something. Hmmm I'm stumped!

I need a drink or 3.

If your worried about it then pull the drain plug and let a half a quart or so drain out.

A touch over the second dot is nothing to worry about.

Let me ask you - is the car on perfectly level ground when you're checking the oil?

Did you also change the filter? If not then 3.5 quarts is about all it would take to be full.

Also are you cranking the engine, then shutting it off and checking the oil?

Yeah and it was sitting for about 2 hours

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by roycivic92 &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">dont worry man ,you maybe have like 1/4 of a quart extra. if your worried just drain some</TD></TR></TABLE>

I hope you right 1/4 Qts over = 1/2 inch over on the dipstick.

Yeah I want to drain some, but I'll have to drive over 27 more miles to do it.
And that will be fun trying to recap that thing when pouring like mad.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by ho bag &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">If your worried about it then pull the drain plug and let a half a quart or so drain out.</TD></TR></TABLE>

Yeah I'm worried obviously. Heh Heh

I sure hope I didn't damage anything!

What about running the car out of oil yesterday? When I discovered the oil cap off, I checked the oil and there was none!! It did go half full though when adding a Quart, so I assume that even if the stick shows none the car would still be ok because there would still be some oil. Also no oil light popped up. And now that I'm over I wonder if there is mixed oil in there. Would a little bit of non synthetic oil ruin anything?

Sorry for the long essay I just want all the facts to be said.

Thanks peeps your help is appreciated!!!

if you caught it soon enough it probably wont be too affected.
Mixed oils is no problem,
if you ran synth, before the incident- that prolly helped save your engine just that much better..

If you checked the oil after the car sat for a few hours then it will read incorrectly too much.

You're supposed to crank the engine, let it run for a minute or so, then shut it off, THEN check the oil.

You might be right on the dot if you check it like this.

It was sitting for 2 hours or less. Why inccorect? It seems that the level would be more correct. please explain.

I have heard allot of people say checkin oil when it's cold the next morning is most accurate. Well every one has there own way I guess. I usually let it warm to operating temp, turn it off, wait five or more minutes, then check level.

If your low oil pressure light never came on, I doubt that you could have caused any damage. Don't worry.

Drain a little out when you get a chance. Driving a few miles slightly overfull will not hurt it.

I'm telling you how it's supposed to be checked according to Honda service manuals.

If you usually check the oil level by cranking the car, shutting it off, and waiting a few minutes then why not try it that way before posting about it? not being an ***, just telling you the right way it is supposed to be checked.

I would say that this is not a problem at all. I usually put 4 quarts in the del Sol. The book says to put in 3.5, but that's too much of a pain to deal with a half quart sitting around. It does use a little without any leaks, but it's a little more than what is extra, so at about 4,500 miles (the point at which I change the oil), it's on the lower dot. It works out well for me, I would say that if you are only that much over and burn or leak oil, to just leave it in there. I check my oil first thing in the morning as well.

I just asked for an explaination

That's Cool, but I did do what I said. You should read all of the post before judging me on it's validity. I originally checked it that way as stated, but also checked it at work the next day after a couple hours sitting. No worries though. No harm no foul.

My Qoute:

"Welp after running the engine and letting it settle, I discovered that it was over about 1/2 inch from the top dot."

Hey I don't want to argue like OP on this forum and will glady help people even if the question isn't that bright, so please bro lets all be cool.

On a positive note:
I checked the oil level after warming it up after work, and its only about a 1/4 inch over, so I believe there is something to what you said about it sittiing to long. I just never noticed such.

Thanks for everyones help and sugestions.

CHEERS!!

I would never do that. I was always told you can blow a crank seal, so thats not worth the risk of dropping 4 qts. That's kinda rediculous. I do however think you have a point that it's not much over and will burn off a bit.

I have leaned towards driving it slowly until the oil burns down to a normal level.

One more...

Just cuz the dealer does a bad job doesn't make me feel better about F~ing up.
I do not follow idiots like them!
