Is it better to sell a Type R fully modded or in a somewhat stock form
Need your advise (especially Toronto area folks),
I've got a 97 Type R for sale with very few K's on it and can't decide whether I should stripe the big ticket items off first and sell for less money or sell the whole car lock-stock-and-barrel for more money?
The reason why I'm asking is that I'm finding that most of the people who like my car don't have the kind of cash I'm selling it for. Nobody ever says that it's not worth that much, it's just simply a case of a limited audience. By striping it down I'm in effect broadening my target audience right?
Just about now you guys are thinking, "why the hell is it so hard to sell an R". Well mostly because it's modded to hell.
1997 Type R 40,000Km
Never Winter Driven
JDM Front-end with HID's
JDM 4.785 Final Drive Gear set
JDM Rear upper control arms
Mugen N1 suspension
Mugen MF10 Rims
Mugen LSD
Mugen Oil pan
Mugen Front/Rear strut tower bars
Mugen Thermostat
Mugen Rad Cap
Mugen Pedals
Mugen Shift ****
Mugen 260 Km/h Speedo and Gauge Bezel
Mugen Valve Springs
Mugen 4-1 Header
Mugen Twin Loop Exhaust
Spoon 4 Piston Calipers (with Endless CC-X brake pads)
Spoon Lower tie bar
Spoon flywheel
Spoon Clutch
Spoon Carbon Fiber Front Lip
Spoon Radiator Stay
Spoon Radiator Hose set
And a whole slew of engine related mods that puts out over 185Whp naturally aspirated.
What should I put in the Auto Trader?
Package A: The whole car lock-stock-and-barrel ($36,500 Cdn)
OR
Package B: Just the car with JDM Front-end, all engine related goodies (V-AFC, MSD, PS92, Weisco pistons, Knife-edge crank ect...ect..), Mugen 4-1 header, Mugen Twin-loop exhaust, AEM intake ($29,500 Cdn)
Help me choose. The choice is yours...

Hell,at that point might aswell sell it with all the mods.It would be too much work to remove all of them.Just make you price with the mods firm so you don't lose your ***.
That's true, I could always spend the $20-30 bucks and put it in the Auto Trader with Package A first and see how the response is before I resort to Package B.
Nice car. Pull any mods you can off. They add NOTHING to the used value of the car.
You will get 0 cents on the dollar for your modifications no matter how nice they are.
People never seem to get this - a $20k car with $20k worth of modifications is still a $20k car.

Tell me about it. Dealership won't even consider my car for a trade in when they see unless it's for $17,000 Cdn
My biggest fear is that people are going to look at the Auto Trader and think that I'm on crack trying to sell a 97 Type R for almost double what a stock 97 in average condition would be selling for. Other than Honda-Tech, I don't think that most people know all that much about Spoon and Mugen.

You're advertising in the wrong places my friend. Autotrader is for stock vehicles that are purchased by regular folk who are not interested in performance modifications.

Very nice R, 35mugen. You are a Mugen *****!! J/k. Like mentioned, your car is worth more stock. Sell the Mugen parts on the side.
I have a feeling that I'm going to be spending alot of time at the shop on the weekends ripping parts off the car. You guys are going to have a field day scooping up the used goodies in the classified section.
I have to agree that you won't get anything for the mods. Nobody is going to pay 36k for a Type R unless you find the right person at the right time, which is probably 99% not going to happen. On the other hand there will be many many people wanting your parts (like me [N1 suspension - cough cough]), and it shouldn't be too hard to sell a slightly modded R. Hell, you could probably sell your front end to someone who wants to swap to make it worth it.
Stock or close to stock cars are always easier to sell. Plus, you can always sell the mods for more money than you would be able to add to the price of the car.

stereotyping sucks.
the car is worth 40k if someone wants to pay for it.
imho, mods do add value to the car. just not exactly what you dumped into it.
If I were you I would part out what you can.
I think you will sell the car quicker that way.
I can't see anyone buying a ITR for 40k

i'd buy your n1 suspension, and sppon 4 pot calipers....email me back benben672@hotmail.com
Just a piece of advise from a car dealer. For every $ you add in mods you can subtract that from what the car is worth. I know this sucks but it is true. I sold a 00 ITR with a Jackson SC and Mugen exhaust and Racing Hart wheels for $23k and 5k miles on her.
I also sold a 00 ITR with all stock for the same price with 10k miles on it. Modding a car KILLS the resale....unless you find that special buyer. All of the cars we stock that are modded or tuned take 2 to 3 times longer to sell than a car priced the same that is all stock.
Just a dealers 2 cents.

Like I said, the dealer offered my $17,000 Cdn. What you're saying is very true. Dealers wouldn't touch my car with a 10ft pole. Why can't there be like a Honda-tech car dealership. When ever you open an "Options" magazine they have dealership solely in the business on buying and reselling modded cars.

My thoughts? Advertise it around the net As-Is with all the parts included. If no one bites after a while, then worry about parting it out.
