Default Overheating...could I have blown my head gasket?

I accidently pulled of a coolant line and cooland started pouring every where. I finally got it after about 30-40 seconds. I was at a friends house, so I figured I can make it home...well I get on it about a mile awau from my house And i get t light and see the temp gauge go past the middle, i didnt go no where near the redline on the temp gauge. I let the car cool down and refilled the coolant and now the temp is at normal, I drove it hard and let it idle for 20 mins and the temp stayed normal. I did a compression test and got the usual 300 psi across ( I have 12:1 compression pistons). If I blew my headgasket, the engine would have overheated again? And the compression test would have yielded lower numbers?
