02 Honda Odyssey Questions
Hello all. My 85 CRX lacks the room for My wife, myself, and 2 growing kids so tonight we put a 02 Odyssey on hold for ourselves at the local used car dealer. We feel confident in this dealer, as my wife knows the owners, and have bought from them before. The van has 91k on the odo, and he said the transmission was serviced at 80k. He said the trans is the weak link if neglected. Couple questions;
1. How durable are the engines (3.5 V6) and more importantly, the auto transmission?
2. What kind of real gas mileage do you usually get with and auto V6 van driving conservativley? I know what the EPA estimates are, and usually aren't accurate.
3. At 91k would you reccomend getting the extended warranty which is 4 years for $1600?
4. It has power sliding side doors. How well do they hold up?
5. How well does the traction control/ABS help in snow, rain?
Any help, suggestions, comment would be much appreciated. I am pretty excited to finally decide on a vehicle after months of looking. I want to make sure I am making a good choice for a family vehicle to last for years. Thanks!

As a general Honda rule automatic transmission's don't take beating's too well, but why would your wife be hard launching the minivan?
the EPA estimates are going to be alot more accurate then some jo shmo who will probably have vastly different driving habits to you. What kind of driving is prevalent for you?
I'd definitely opt for that warranty, just be careful on what the warranty actually covers. If it excludes vital components then it might be worth giving the miss.
I was probably not alot of help, but it seem's that its better then whatever help you haven't gotten so far haha.

Well, we went ahead and bought the van. Runs great, has 91k on it. AND, we went to Walmart with the kids, AND HAD PLENTY OF ROOM! ! ! Wow. As far as driving, she will be pretty gentle with it until she has to folow my CRX somewhere, then it will be hard launching, maybe some drifting, and some powerslides. I actually gunned the motor by accident when I first drove it and spun the tires pulling out onto the road. I am used to driving my gutless Sentra, or my mom's occasional Plymouth Voyager, so I underestimated the 3.5 V6. I will be more gentle next time. And we got the warranty, expressly to cover the auto trans. I really never thought I would have a minivan, but I really love it. My 3 year old loves it so much she didn't want to get out, just climb around. She also asks the van to open the doors, and it does just for her, (via Dad's remote). Love the van so far. lets hope it carries on. I think if I fold the rear seats down and put 2x4's on the rear bumper I could park my CRX in there.
Get the vin # and call your local Honda dealer to see if that vans tranny was ever recalled or if it still needs to be recalled. If it needs to be recalled you will get a free tranny on Honda's dime.

Good stuff lol.
i think you probly made the best choice in a minivan
i dont know if it still is but i know from the time it came out and for like the next ten or so years i was #1 on motor trends minivan list and i thing jd powers too. its the only mini va i would buy, but i hope i dont have to.
what are your plans on modding it. and dont say you dont want to because you will do something to it.

check out odyclub.com for all your odyssey questions (but they've been down for the past week for server updates).
i also bought a '04 odyssey used from a honda dealer about a year and a half ago and it's been great. i read all the horror stories about the transmission and sliding doors but i figure i'll deal with it if it happens. i also have the extended warranty. i have 1 1/2 yr old and 4 yr old girls and they both love it.
mine has the same color and interior....but i have the blacked out headlights, blacked out the grill, tinted the windows and custom tinted the taillights....and will be putting 19's on this weekend.

The only plans so far are DVD player for the kids, maybe rims later. Who knows. The CRX gets first dibs on cash for mods right now, then the Protege, then the van since it's the new kid in town.
Any one know the wheel specs for a Odyssey? Hub size, I think offset is 50mm? , and bolt pattern? I get in my search a bolt pattern of 5x4.5, 5x114.3, 5x115, etc... Would a Prelude rim be capable of holding up a van? The Accord rims look the same as Odyssey rims.
they are 5x114.3. i also have a dvd player in our van for the girls and it is the best thing if you want them quiet...
the wheels ended up being about 1/4" wider than i hoped and 19's might be too big since i probably won't lower it. but my buddy w/ an RX8 practically gave me the wheels so whatever. here's the pic.
