Ring gear / vss / speedo Qs
Hello, spent hours with new vss's/cluster's/wiring looms and testing **** trying to figure why my speedo is dead. Snap scanner was getting hz then it was not, then it was. weird **** was happening.
All my gears work great!
The transmission has been making noise on de-accel for awhile now.
My last test was with "key-on" I took the whole vss unit out and put it in a drill like a drill bit, turned it over and the speedo worked fine. Does this mean the ring gear is busted?
This was just key-on. im going to try it again running. if the speedo works while running a drill on the vss, it has to be the transmission ring gear correct?
Also, Would i have to pull the engine to replace the trans? h22a4 EJ8.
TIA, you guys are Awesome!

If you car is still driveable and you still have all your gears, that means your gear set if fine. Your ring gear "aka final drive" is also ok if you are able to drive.
If you say your cluster registers when you spin the VSS with a drill, then your VSS/speedometer is fine. Sound like you may have a broken speed sensor gear attached to the diff.

#2 is your "ring gear" aka final drive
#1 is your diff
The speed sensor gear is the slim gear attached on the left side of the diff in that picture. That gear is what turns the VSS when your vehicle is in motion.
You do not have to pull the entire motor to take the tranny out.
