Oil Consumption Question...
Ok, so I have an annoying oil consumption issue... About 2.5 quarts an oil change increment.
Anyway, I pulled my new intake off to do some modifications to it, it's been on about 2 oil change increments, only to find that I have ZERO oil residue in my intake tube.
Now, if my rings were bad, wouldn't I have some oil residue in my intake tube, due to excessive positive crankcase pressure from blow by? Is it possible my oil consumption issues are simply caused by bad valve seals?
If so, and I can just replace my valve seals, that saves me a bit of money for a while... I just don't want to be going through 4 quarts of oil a day at EXPO, and if I can put off my rebuild until after EXPO, that would be great.
Any input is appreciated.

shoot, i may not by able to ante up and help pay for getting that mugen intake for you, but i'll help you with your oil needs at expo. i may not have mobil 1, amsoil, or royal purple or whatever but i've got quaker state, valvoline, and pennzoil... all synthetic. you let me know what you need and i'll hook you up.

Hey man, you wouldn't necessarily have oil in your intake due to blow by. But you could be burning oil for a number of reasons, piston rings, valve seals, valve guides, head gasket. Honestly all of them are an easy fix if you do the work yourself so don't get too worried about it.
I'd start out with a leakdown test and see what's up. If your still wondering what it is, I'd pop your head off the block and take out your valve train and valves. Check your valve seals and check your valve guides, and check that your valves are sealing properly as well. If you take your head off make sure you replace the headgasket while your at it!

All good advice. I'm going through 1 qt of Mobil1 5W30 every 600-1200 miles and my intake is spotless. I know it's not valve seals as it only smokes on the big cam (as opposed to leaving a light from a stop). I suspect rings - number 4 cylinder appears black (top of piston) and getting some deposit on plug while 1-3 are spotless. Probably doing rebuild this summer as it's kinda annoying having to clean the black gooey crap off the rear bumper after a couple redline blasts...
Good luck...
Good luck...
Jordan I was having the same problem at E7..i went throught 5 quarts of 5w40 sythetic. I pulled my head and my exhaust valves were caked with shti...do the valve seals and see if that will fix it for now
if not you may need rings.
I honestly dont think that a leak down test will tell you if the valve seals are bad...its putting pressure in the cylinder with the valves closed. if you hear air coming out of the exhaust the its a bad exhaust valve seating(or bent), out of throttle body/intake...bad intake valve, oil cap...rings, coolant...your fuked
any one wanna correct me?
i could be wrong but thats how I feel about leak down test

Jordan, what oil are you using and have you tried anything different? I used to use only Mobil 1 Synthetic and I would burn off about 1-2 quarts per oil change depending on how hard I drove it, I then switched to royal purple and have done 2 or 3 oil changes now and I only burn off maybe a half a quart or a little more. It could help your oil consumption but it sounds like your burning off a lot more than I was, so a leak down sounds like the way to go to see what's up, GL
to the OP
You are using Mobil 1 and complain about consumption... I was there with you until my bearings spun. IMHO -don't use M1 if your car burns oil... M1 seems to burn at a quicker rate. Rebuilt motor to prove it.

Jordan,
I am glad I caught this thread you started. I have been experiencing some oil consumption as well. I have been using Mobil 1 as well. I just changed my oil yesterday, and I was right at 3000 miles of just driving to work and back. My oil level was really low and I would also like to find out what might be the problem.
Hopefully this will be an issue dealt with before Expo8. SubScribed!
