I have a 97 Accord and the heat shield on the catalytic converter has a loud rattle.
I checked it out today and found that it was rusted out around 2 of the 4 bolts that hold it on.

Has anyone else had this problem???
I was thinking about getting a metal band clamp or something to just tighten it up.
Will that work ok, or do I need a new heat shield?

yeah i have the same trouble I lost the lower half of my heatshield

I had the same problem, I found some pipe wraping in the plumbing alse at wal-mart and used that, works like a charm.

 

i just ripped mine out

 

Just take it off!!

 

If you use the clamp idea it works great until the constant rubbing and the water that can be trapped inbetween the heat shield and the pipe will cause the pipe to leak early... I had the same problem. Just my .02.

i found out that the top cover on the cat itself was only held down by 1 bolt, with the other 3 being rusted out. check that out as well

 

at honda we put two large hose clamps around the entire cat and cat shield. it works well.

 

check this out......the guy at the brookdale honda put a metal strap around it and tightened it down free of charge when they did my timing belt service

IE it was listed on the invoice with a 0.00 dollar amount but I guess they consider that part of the 30.00 Shop supply fee

total was 638.78 and that is not too bad for the twin cities burkle honda wanted 798 for the same service....

 

I had the same problem, Went down to NAPA and he said I stock the 9" clamps just for that purpose!! Took 5 minutes, no more rattle .
