Default Running open header on the street.

This is not a question...merely an observation for those newbies thinking about doing this.

I have a Type One B-pipe which has somehow worked itself loose from my Cat. The result is open header:

1. The car has NO *****...I mean no torque at all.

2. Fumes dump out from directly under me and smell not great.

3. car sounds like a dump truck below 3K...but awesome above 3K.

4. if you think your R attracted a lot of attention before...

Bottom line...it sucks.

Was the opposite for me. Open header rules...at the track.

Well put.

I also think it's absurdly inconsiderate to run open exhaust on public roads.

For that matter, even at an autoX events.

i also think that. if someone is running an open downpipe or something, that's an awesome sound

but for honda's in the 1.x liters, sounds like fart at low rpms

I saw dyno proof from MPH that open header does a lot of good for the ITR. I wouldn't do it personally because I couldn't even stand the noise from my TypeOne catback.

if you're on a track, and have the windows down/fans on high, and you're up at speed then it shouldn't be a problem.

Tweakie- who drove open header and his ears starting bleeding

Those are some interesting dyno results. Dave Stadulis and Chris once did the same thing and the car with full SMS exhaust posted better #'s than when they ran it with open header.

It does feel slightly quicker in spots...like rushing from 5K to VTEC x-over...but I can barely chirp my tires from a roll. The torque is basically non-existent.

1. The car has NO *****...I mean no torque at all.

Wrong. open header shows gains ACROSS THE BOARD over the stock catback. I believe the most efficient catback's (SMS & Hytech) show almost the same gains, however..... I have the plots to prove it - just give me some time to post up the pic.

I believe it *feels* like it has no torque at lower rpms because of the god awful racket it's making..... you *think* it should be pulling like a rocketship judging by the noise... that's the conclusion I've come to.

2. Fumes dump out from directly under me and smell not great.

True. Although with a test pipe and catback, the fumes still stink... they just come out a little further back.

3. car sounds like a dump truck below 3K...but awesome above 3K.

Sound pleasantness is purely subjective. Let me just say that spec b's make it even more of an adventure. After riding around open header for a 2 month stint and then again for another month, I'm looking for the quietest catback possible... Anybody wanna give me their mugen twinloop in exchange for itr catback + cash?

4. if you think your R attracted a lot of attention before...

Oh yes, you do attract *more* attention but hey what can you do? I mean, it's still not PY (well mine isn't anyway.....

I also think it's absurdly inconsiderate to run open exhaust on public roads.

For that matter, even at an autoX events.

Hey now, I resemble that remark! Let's just say that it drops another .5 seconds on a 60 second course.

And as far as the noise comments... I keep a pack of 20 disposable earplugs in my passenger floorboard - should anyone wanna carpool...

To be fair this Dyno is with Skunk Stage 1's and Kenji's ecu with light tuning of the cam gears. Car runs lean in the midrange with no exhaust.

i know someone who had an 'open header' set up ...

he attached a 2 foot pipe after his header...... it was loud as hell... driving on the freeway is cool unless you hit a bump and your foot moves an 1/8 of an inch of more then its SUPER LOUD!!

I would concur that open header makes it run more lean... but hey, whatever the car likes - it makes power so... so be it.

my timing is at 21 degrees too... no knock whatsoever... weird, eh?

Looks like someone didn't torque the bolts to his B pipe
What I usually will do is put a 2nd nut on each bolt to keep the main one from loosening. A bit of Loctite will also do the trick.

Ross its not so bad, I had my 2 bottom bolts fall out on my way home from CT on I84 Try running open header at 80MPH for an hour or so. I finally stopped at that big truck stop on the border, bought 2 big master locks, jacked the car up, and locked the b pipe to the cat (It made it a bit quieter at least)
