'02 HELP: my engine is roaring after replacement of the timing belt
I recently had the timing belt, etc. replaced on my '02 Accord. Everything seems fine until I step on the gas. The engine roars as if there's a hole in the exhaust manifold. (I formerly had an early 80's Civic that the manifold was falling off on--it sounded/felt just the same.)
My mechanic said he checked over the whole exhaust system and found no leaks/cracks. He checked all the work he'd done to make sure there was nothing loose. He ended up tightening the engine bolts, but that didn't seem to make a difference.
Does anyone have any ideas about what might cause this? I want my quiet, purring motor back again!

It seems the balance shaft belt is out of time. Ask the your mechanic to redo the work. If he does not know how to set the balance belt, go to a honda dealer for a fix and request the mechanic to reimburse the whole cost resulting from the fix. Remember to ask for photos prove from the dealer in case you need those in a small claim court.
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll let my mechanic know and I'll refer him to the FAQ about changing the timing belt in this forum. He's really conscientious about the job and has asked we bring the car in for him to re-do.
If anyone has any other ideas, they are most welcome!

i had my water pump changed last week and since then i'm having the same problem, i'm planning to bring it to honda to have them recheck everything

Sounds similar to what I've experiencing. https://honda-tech.com/zerothread/2287400.
I also have a vibration which you didn't seem to mention, but the engine does seem louder than before as well. I've noticed a few people reporting problems like this after timing belt changes...havn't tracked down the culprit though.

It was, indeed the balance shaft belt as billyrusa suggested. When our mechanic addressed that issue, we got our lovely car back. I hope your mechanic is as conscientious as ours was! He was glad to re-do the work for free so he could learn to do a better job.
