How do I check the transmission fluid on a 88 Civic lx AUTOMATIC?

Get a Haynes Manual.
But, IIRC 88-91 (if not all) Honda automatics are checked when HOT. Meaning the car has been fully warmed up/driven. Leave it RUNNING, and pull the stick, wipe, pull and read, it should be clearly marked.
Also, the condition and smell of the fluid is important. Burned/dark = bad. Stinky = bad (burned). red, slippery, good.

where is the dip stick located? I did a quick search for it, but couldn't find it.

id start looking at the transmission... so if you are infront of your car looking down, the tranny is on the left. find a dip stick and pull it.
i was just lookin at a pic of my AT after i pulled it (because i cant remember ever checking the fluid in the trans) and the dip stick aint on the back of the trans.
it would be hillarious if 88s didnt have a dip stick.

IIRC on my 89dx crx I thought it was towards the firewall, in the middle (if facing the car, more on the right side, if anything). It was a pita to reach without getting dirty (if wearing a coat/winter). It is down low (just a touch), so it won't be jumping out at you.
the one in my 1990 lx is up front left side of the engine compartment... between air cleaner and exhaust manifold look kinda far down. It's yellow painted and looks just like a oil dipstick, only a little bigger.
