Default miss shift @@@@@@@@

after all those posts i've read, there are so many people missed shift thier ITR and results, bent valve ..etc.
about three weeks ago i was driving my friends 2001 BMW M coupe, i was on hwy, and when i just about to exit the hwy i think since he sold the car, and the guy is picking the car next day, i can just push it without he bitching at me. so i was in 5th gear i wanted to downshift to 3rd, but results, i went into first gear.
the rpm was passing the redline all the way till the end, so i clutch it again and put in 3 gear. i was like "oh **** this car is getting fu*ked" but nothing happened, the car still drives normal, next day the new owner came to pick up the car.. and never called us about the car so i assume the car still runs fine.

my question is from 5th to 1 st gear on any other car it should crack the piston bent valve ...etc but how come nothing happened ? is it because it;s a BMW .
if it was my R i think i might see the engine flying in the air........... is our R more weaker than BMW ??

I have a friend who used to own a 1999 M3. He drag raced it a couple of times at the track. He brings it back for routine maintenance only to find out he sheared a few bolts on the diff housing (somewhere around there I forgot the details).

So is BMW more durable than Honda? In some cases yes, but in your case I think you were just lucky.

In before the lock

AND - misshifts cause WAY more damage on BMW then on the R, if you look at any bmw boards EVERYONE has bent their valves and is bitching and complaining (i'm talking like the m class models..and no, i don't remember the board)...

then again, if you search through here, you can find a lot of misshift posts as well, if you search the archives way back, there was a thread in the ITR forum that actually said the complete opposite of what you did...

something along the lines of "WTF So many BMW owners complaining of bent valves" and some wasn't even related to mis-shifting.

Yes, you got luckey. BMW doesn't use higher quality parts, most likly has a redline lower than an R anyway.

Whew, good thing whatever damage you caused wasn't obvious enough to sour the deal! You really stuck it to that guy that bought the car! I'm sure he deserved exactly what he got.

no i dont think so, because i was looking at the rpm needle bouncing up and down and then i did the clutch. may be just lucky, but i still dont know why ? 5th to 1st should really hurt it. but nothing happened the car still run smooth on the way home

Maybe it's not an "interference" motor.
Furthermore they probably have hydraulic lifters, and they might have taken up some of the slack.

Since the rear wheels are the drive wheels I would guess the 5 to 1 shift locked them up instead of blowing the engine.

I tought it was nearly impossible to gear in first while the car is moving !!!

It must have made an incredible noise when you shift in first...

Yeah, but it's not ... like pulling an e-brake unless your rear drive tranny/engine/rear diff locks up ...

That's like pulling the e-brake!!

You are doing a 5-3, which means you are slowing down. Bimmer's gear are pretty high and if I remember correctly, some BMWs can have 1st gear upto 60mph. So if you were on the brakes and the car is slowing down a little over the redline (You probably over reved to the point of our car's redline )is not much a prob I think. The new M3 DO get lots of misshift and end up bending valves...etc.

Since everyone else is playing nicey nice and not saying what they are really thinking, I will take the liberty of expressing myself fully.

You are a fucktard. First for ragging on someone else's car, and then for BREAKING someone else's car. Oh, and let's go ahead and add the fact that you didn't even bother to tell the new owner, who may end up having to shell out thousands of dollars if more damage occurs.

M motors are stout, but if you go over 8k rpm on a stock S52 motor, you bent valves at the very least. Just because you are too god damned untalented to notice they are bent does not mean the motor isn't hurting.

I hope you get what you deserve, because you've got an assload of bad car karma just waiting to happen.

Warren

Engines are built with a factor of safety. Redlines are alwys under-rated. The higher performing engines have higher factor of safety. The rev put the engine in the red zone but not long enough for any noticable damage to result. The factor of safety built into the engine compensated for this over rev for the brief period. It is possible you may have damaged the engine and you don't know just yet (give it a few thousand miles) but it is also likely that you have not.

well for people who wants to bitch at me, it's fine. but can u guarrenty you'd never do this in your life. i wasnt meant to jump gears from 5th to 1st, it was and accident, that was second time i drove that car, didnt know that car that much, plus BMW's shifter is shorter than my itr. i did that miss shift by "MISTAKE" not on purpose, and yes i was stupided, i shifted like it was a muscle car, that's how i got into first gear, and for those who wants to think i'm a f*cker fine, just make sure u'll never miss shift. and i havent miss shift any gear in my R yet

No one cares that you misshifted (not miss shifted) in itself. It's the fact that you did it to someone elses car, someone you probably didn't know (it was sold already, therefore I don't consider your friend the owner of it anymore). That's what makes you a big fucktard. It pretty obvious that you are "stupided" enough to not care that the new owner may be working his ******* *** off to buy that car and now might have to pay large repair bills to fix something YOU caused.

You may have gotten lucky and caused no damage, but you're still a fucktard.
