Default Clear isn't clear!

Yesterday I decided to respray my roof since it was really oxidized (red, san marino "pink" or as my bro calls it "dan marino pink" haha) with clearcoat failure, so I just said screw it and took a trip to Kragen to pick up some auto paint. I sanded it down, primered it, sanded that a bit then did the basecoat (nighthawk black pearl) All went well up until this point: clear coat!

No matter how many different methods I tried, it just wouldn't lay down actually clear! I tested it out on some other stuff and it worked perfectly. When I painted my spark plug cover it came out great, I did a 2-tone red->black fade then cleared that and the clear went on so smoothly I didnt even have to wetsand. Right now it basically looks like it did before I even started the clear. I went through 2 BIG cans of Duplicolor clear and it still looks like crap.

Do I just need to sand it down then polish it up? I've done some rattlecan stuff but never on a body panel and to my horror, this is the one job that decided to screw me over. I dont know if pictures would help bbut I can get them if needed. Any help would be extremely...helpful lol. Thanks

Dood rent an air compressor, get a spray gun and do it the right way. You'll never get a two stage paint job to work with rattle cans. I'm sorry, dude but that's funny stuff. LMAO!!!

oh ye of little faith! Well i decided to just go at it with some 1000 grit and medium cut polishing compound which, as opposed to what you haters in here thought lol, turned out DAMN nice for a rattle can job. I've only done a small section but when I'm finished I'll post some pics

It's far from a professional spray but I'll be damned if someone wants to say that it still doesnt look great.

dang, why are you guys such douchebags?

anyways...

if you want to test it out on a small spot then try this to see if it works for you:

wetsand with 1000 grit until the finish is dull but smooth. You want it to have a uniform look to it, no little It almost looks like primer actually, but when you hit it with a medium cut polishing compound it brings it right back out.

My problem was that the clear wasnt laying down flad but rather in little dots (it's a rattle can, of course ot comes out that way lol) so by sanding it down I was able to get it flat, and the polishing compound shined it up

It's a hell of a lot of work, it is going to take me quite a while to finish, but it will look great when it's finished. If I posted pics now I'd just get laughed at lol since it's just a small part that's finished but when I'm done there will be pics galore.

they are being douche bags because some noob might come on here and think you can get decent results with a can.

MAYBE on small parts like mirrors, lips, etc. but the paint is CHEAP and it wont last. i know from experience

Dumplicolor FTL

oh and the clear prolly isnt clear because you put too much on (looks hazy) or it might be from dry spray (looks dry). looks like u passed that hurdle tho

yeah it's because it came out too dry. I just put on lots of extra clear to allow lots of sanding.

I know it's not going to be perfect, and to be honest I am just going to pay to have it done next time even though it only ran me about $20. My roof was just horribly oxidized and faded and literally anything, including a half-assed rattle can job, would look infinitely better. It's just temporary anyways until I get the whole car redone.
