Well, at 119k I've got my first mechanical problem happening. When I'm driving straight, moving the wheel off-center to the right results in a rapid, dull, knocking sound. Doesn't happen when I move it to the left, though. I only need to steer about 15 degrees to make it happen.

I'd be inclined to say it's the tires, but they have less than 1,000 miles on them.

Also, the noise isn't accompanied by any vibration through the steering wheel.

Any ideas?

 

check your cv joints. could be bad

 

I described the problem to someone at the dealership and they're saying it's the wheel bearing...thing is, in my experience a bad wheel bearing hums consistently. I'm not about to pay the dealership to fix something I can take care of, but I don't wanna go on a wild goose chase replacing things that aren't busted. Any input?

Describing the problem to a dealer, and having them give you an answer, opposed to bringing your car TO a dealer, and having them inspect it and tell you whats wrong are 2 very different things.

 

yeah sounds like wheel bearing or axles to me

Wheel bearing would make a grinding sound rather than a knock..But i guess it could knock...

 

Could be a bad ball joint or cv joint, they are both super easy to check. I can't speak on wheel bearings, I haven't had one go out yet.

before you do anything...buy a 1-1/4" socket and a breaker bar, take the hubcap off and crank the axle nut on tight. somebody might've slipped up and not tightened it.

i had the same problem...but it was because i was a dumbass and didn't tighten it at 3am. the axle nut is backing off and the bearing is seperating. fix it asap. if it recently started doing this, the bearing is probably still good. i drove around for like a week on mine because i didn't give a ****, finally fixed it and it was fine right away.

Yeah, the thing is the dealerships near me charge like $100 to look at your car, and I'm not into all that if there's an easy answer. Figured it was worth a shot.

Thing is, I'm fine with fixing things, I learn as I go, but I have no idea how to tell visually if my CV joint is bad, etc. It just drives me nuts that it only happens when I steer to the right, even slightly.

If anybody can tell me what I'm looking for when I get the car up, I'd really appreciate it. Sorry for the n00b-level mechanic skills!
