Hood weight reduction......ghetto style. (Debate/brainstorm/converse inside)
Okay. Everyone goes for the Carbon fiber hoods.....who wouldn't? The weight reduction is sweet and the strengh is awesome. However, there are some of us who don't have the green stuff to dump on a nice quality hood and no one wants to purchase a POS.
Therefore, in the meantime while you are saving up for your CF hood or more useful modifications (swap
) Lets consider and talk about this:
What if you were to remove all of the supporting frame crap from underneath the hood and then pin the sucker down just like you do with a CF? (For those of you who don't know CF = Carbon Fiber
) Now obviously if this is a daily driver, you are going to have to be able to lock the hood. So locking hood pins is a must. And I think it would make perfect sense to get a hood pin added to the alarm.
But, what do you guys think.......?

Would tear the sheet metal? If you are running pins it keeps the thing down though. I believe I saw the Civics in Speed World Challenge running pins in the stock hood.......It flipped up after a nice little rear-ender and I saw the undercarriage.
Then again this is a daily that shouldn't be going faster than 100.

we did that to my friend's crx on his stock hood by removing the skeleton right under neath the hood. took off some weight, he's very ghetto tho, and wanted to do it....but hey whatever works.
btw he does have hood pins with stock hood latch

for all the weight those supports are, i dont think you would notice anything at all, i dont think that it would even register on a dyno!

Anyway, about how much weight would this remove? 20-30lbs?
I'll be the guinea pig. My hoods f'ed anyway.......
I wonder how much cheaper a fiberglass hood would be than a carbon fibre one?
fiberglass = 300-400
I'm considering doing this on my STD. The car is just too gutless, and I don't want to spend much more money on giving it extra horsepower, so weight reduction is the direction I'm taking.
I plan on making a fiberglass hood, but I know I probably won't get around to that for a while, even though I have all the supplies. I just have too many projects that need to get done.
So why do you think it would need hood pins? Though I'm not against using them, I'm just wondering. To me, it doesn't seem like it would need pins any more than if you had the skeleton, as long as you retain the stock locking mechanism.

CF (fiber images) = 650 (factory direct)

Hood pins because I do plan on removing the locking mech.....that seems heavy as well.
I basically and going to strip it down to a fricken piece of sheet metal. I also plan on running four pins because of this.
However, since I blew the engine yesterday, I won't have the ability to do anything with it for a little while.

dumb question...
if you use hood pins and you crash, is the hood going to turn into a guillotine?

I'm wondering even for a CF hood, how safe are these? One vendor showed how their hoods survived a roll-over with "little to no damage"
