Default Push button starter (before you yell search, read)

So I have toyed with the idea of doing a push button starter in my car, obviously it seems pointless to have to put a key in the ignition and then turn it on to start the car.

And I've also toyed around with having a new ignition colum fabbed up out of some kind of mildly thick aluminum to cover the steering column after removing the ignition.

this thread mainly was the motivation behind pursuing this further since it seems people have toyed with the idea but have never pursued it.

I've spoken to wrx-killer-Sti-eater about getting an alarm install so I'm sure he will chime in on this. Unfortunately I obviously wont be posting any pictures or how to's so you can do this yourself as it would obviously expose my alarm system layout.

So basically in a nutshell here is what I want to do.

Eliminate using a key to turn the car on or off. and removing the steering wheel lock, because just like the other thread says (a thief will break that off anyway) So I am sure there is some way to just completely remove that system from the steering column and I'll probably pick up a spare one just to toy around with it.

So in theory I would need a relay for the A/C mode, ignition mode, and then I press the start button to turn my car on.

I would need a relay in the car to prevent my start button from obviously triggering the starter while the car was on.

but obviously I would need a way to turn the car "OFF" in which I was thinking either a timed relay where I hold down the start button for 3 seconds and it would power the car off. Or just turning off the a/c switch which would make obvious sense if you turned your key to that position it would turn the car off anyway.

I dunno too much about electronics so obviously it still needs to be drawn out.

I am having an alarm install done, a clifford 50x.5 per wrx's recommendations so obviously the starter kill in the alarm system would eliminate the start button working at all while the alarm was engaged.

I still am plotting out placement for this as I am not trying to be sneaky and hide anything as far as the start button goes, it will be in a very obvious place. It's more where I am going to put the switches for the a/c and power 2 positions so that they're not tampered with while the car is in motion.

idea's are more than welcome...

I would love nothing more than adapting the security system thats in a new lexus or mercedes benz in my car but unfortunately those methods are not publicly available as far as I know and if so not for a reasonable price what so ever.

So have at it brainstormers.

I don't know why you would PM me and point me to this thread. I don't want to see this. Why are people getting the idea that a push button start would be better than a key cylinder as far as security? Any 15 year old can push a starter button. But not all 15 year olds can punch a key cylinder.

You turn the engine off by switching off the ignition. If you have a push button start, you have an ignition switch, an ACC1 switch, and an ACC2 switch.

What's an ignition colum?

You can easily remove the key cylinder from the steering column. Then you could fabricate a lock box to house the switches, starter button, and ignition wiring. But what would be the end result? No steering column lock and your car can still be push started or hot wired under the hood.

I'm getting to be known as someone that shoots down creative ideas.

I don't see any need for any further security than what wrx-killer can provide. A stealth install and gps tracking. It's not bulky. It's not inconvenient. It doesn't make your car unreliable. It's not overly complicated. It's tried and true. It's easy. And for what you get, it's not expensive.

I've gotta agree here. Too much BS to deal with.

Stealth Alarm with starter kill and another well hidden kill switch on the fuel pump or IGN kill = better than your idea(s).

I applaud you for your ingenuity, but it's simply not necessary.

I linked you to the thread just to get your idea on it. It's not really like a theft deterent really, just a different means of starting the vehicle playing around with trying to build something similar to the infinity and lexus proximity key fob system.

that and I was incredibly bored.
