RSXtypeS'r, looking for four doors. Is the Si Sedan a worthy upgrade?
I've had my typeS for ~3? years. I bought it used from an Infinity/Acura dealership, "Honda certified Pre-Owned." Had less than 11k miles on it, and a 5 year warranty. I got fleeced, way over paid. Its a '03, black completely stock, manual tranny, has ~20k miles on it now.
Once the seats are folded down this car is very practical. Not practical if you're hauling kids around. So like the title asks is the Si Sedan a worthy upgrade? I was really psyched about this car. I read lots of reviews, heard noting but good things.
I've been coming here and looking around since I got my RSX, I knew this would be the place to come for “unbiased”, informed opinions. After about 1 minute on the site I found two threads saying bad stuff about this car. I don't want to have to deal with crappy fit and finish, or pealing paint, or a noisy crappy suspension. I also have the third gear thing happening in the RSX.
Now I'm wondering "is it the car for me?" I like my RSX, so I was thinking that this car would be sort of like a four door RSX, am I wrong?
In the price range I want to stay in, which is this price range with out the Nav, there are no other fun to drive options. There are no Audi, VW, or Subaru dealerships in my area, the closest of these is more than an hour away. If I've got a busted car I don't want to have it towed that far, or have to drive it that far if its something that I could make worse. You see my problem? I don't want to pay for an Infinity, and they don't make a four door 350Z, so my options are pretty limited, keep my car or buy a Si.
Opinions, comments, flamings?

honestly I love the si but hell get a mazdaspeed3. They are fast as hell and have 4 doors very practical also. Thats my 2 cents!
K20Z3 >>> K20A2
At least going from the way it felt driving my Si to my Type S (not talking about corners, just punching it) the Z3 felt way better. Gearing is slightly different too so that might have helped but the A2 fails in comparison.
I've gone from a 2006 Si Coupe, to a 2002 RSX-S, and I'm in the market for a 2007 TW Si Sedan..

I did exactly what you are planning on doing. I had a 2006 RSX-S w/ a handful of mods-intake, exhaust, Hondata re-flash, springs, etc. My wife tells me we are having a baby, so I had to get 4 doors, but I really loved my RSX. I LOVE the Si in every way. I just saw my RSX over the weekend and I will admit, the car does look sexier than the Si. I am not saying I don't like the way the Si looks, but there is just something about the body lines of the RSX. From a perfoemance standpoint, the Si dusts the RSX-S's cookie. The LSD alone makes it that much better. My ONLY complaints about the RSX were the understeer(no LSD) and the suspension was a little stiff. Honda somehow worked the stiffness out of the Si, but made it handle better. Of course, the LSD takes care of the understeer.
Well, as OP stated his RSX is stock, and he's looking for four-door practical car, and may be hauling kids. As for tuning and performance, it does well stock and I love the overall feel better than the RSX-S (I drive my friend's sometimes). Though performance tuning may be a little behind it seems to be the least of your worries with the priorities you listed. Overall feel and design: seats are more comfortable, shifts are smooth (with exception to some cars with 3rd gear prevalent in the K-series RSX), suspension is smooth and finely tuned (some experienced suspension issues which can be fixed), larger trunk space with folding seats, optional navi, aux input for music, digital speedo with shift light, and steering wheel mounted audio/navi/cruise controls. For a daily driver, the creature comforts alone outdo the RSX. Hope this helps
Also, you mentioned Inifiniti 350z??? Well, the Nissan 350 is a 2-seater, but there's the Infiniti G35 which does come in a sedan. It's got a strong V6 with rear or all wheel drive

Yeah I looked at the Z, and the G35 coupe, before I got the RSX. I really wanted a TSX but I don't have that much money to spend. So I figure if I like the RSX and the Si is a better "four door RSX" then I might as well try and find out about it.
Should I sell my car outright or trade it, I've never sold a car before so I have no idea how to go about doing that.
So the Si has a better engine, rides better, and handles better. Have any of you had any issues with the trany, paint, or fit and finish? There were one or two threads about these things, I would hope that they're isolated instances.
I got a quote just now from the local honda place.

I'm pretty sure this is the MSRP. Duh.

I hear through the grapevine that the TSX will be coming in diesel...so the toque and upgrading will probably out weigh the Si performance.

My 4 door Si has 10k miles on it, had it for a year.
I had the 3rd gear issue, had the dealership change tranny fluid and it's fine now, covered under warranty.
No problems with paint, although I let some bird crap bake into the hood, and the extensive highway repaving locally put some dings in the front bumper last summer, but nothing unwarranted.
As for the interior, I don't understand why people say it's so cheap/prone to get messed up. I work at a lumber yard and get in my car everyday covered in sawdust/small pieces of wood, and otherwise dirty from machinery or what have you. My seats, floormats, and armrests look brand new after I vacuum my car. The only noticeable wear and tear is at the bottom of the door that I kick getting out of my car everyday in work boots. I'm sure it'd be fine if I would learn not to do that...oh well.
Overall, I love the car and plan to drive it until the wheels fall off or I die, whichever comes first.

I agree with the exception of my driver's side floormat. Two weeks after buying my car, the mat was already beginning to wear, where my right foot rests. I obviously drive a lot more than you do (had car for 4 months, already at 7.5k miles), but the mats definitely are crappy. I am sure the other mats would be the same, if people rode in my car with me more often. Other than that, I love the Civic's interior. It makes my mom's Accord Ex's interior look like a Kia's.
*If your price range is price of a civic si w/o nav, the only other car I can think of that is even close (in the price range) is a Nissan Sentra SE-R. It's actually cheaper than the Si. Motor Trend had the SE-R (with a LSD) finishing behind the Si in every performance category, but not by too much. IMO, the SE-R is ugly as hell, and the interior in the Si is a lot nicer (Si seats are better, no steering wheels controls on SE-R, etc). But a base one can be had for a cheaper price than a base Si. However, keep in mind the base price of the Si, includes power everything, moonroof, 350w stereo, LSD, etc. I know the LSD is an option on the SE-R and I think the moonroof is too. But, if you like Nissans (you seem to, with talking about the Z and G35) the 4dr SE-R is another option.*

Let's just say I traded my BMW for my 4 door Si. I say why not if ou going to be hauling kid(s) around!!! The 4 door is practical and you still have fun when the kid(s) aren't riding with you!!!! If you are somehow wanting to mod in the future, there are plenty of mods out there noe. Not to mention you can swap a few aftermarket parts between the coupe and the sedan. Intake and header for example.
If you all are going to compare interior wise, PLEASE STOP! Luxury cars are focused on interior and needless stuff. Navi is a huse waste IMO. If you complain about the carpet, get all seaon mats. That will stop your oh so cheap interior thing. Just to let you know though, the Si's interior loves to hold on to lint, so vacuum is a must!! not to mention the 250 watt sound system (not the best), but it's nice bumping music for you when your stuck in traffic. VSA is a plus too, well not all the time but yes, it's a plus. All in all, get if you are expecting, if not keep the RSX. There is a 4 door g35 but is fugly, so you can skip that.
Anyway GL and hope you make a good decision. You can't go wrong either way. Keep or sell/trade.

WTH? The Si is an upgrade of the RSX? Where the hell did you get that information from. I don't have either cars but that statement is very subjective. Just because the Si has LSD, comfortable cloth seats, etc.. doesn't make it an upgrade, especially if you are compare a car that is in the same family. Not to mention that the RSX cost more (yes, that is because it's an Acura, a luxury brand) and has better warranty.
It is like saying the 350Z is an upgrade to the Infinity G35 just because they both perform about the same, the Z is convertable, two seaters or what the reason it may be. No matter what you said, Honda will never be an upgrade to Acura. If that's the case, Acura wouldn't have existed from the beginning.

Whoa, let's keep it cool, calm, and constructive.
I appreciate all the advice guys.
My wife has an Accord Ex, and I'm not impressed with the interior of hers. I do have to say that her interior is much nicer than the one in my RSX.
The SE-R never tempted me, I'm not a big Nissan fan, those were just some of the options that I test drove when I was buying my RSX. I went to Yahoo autos and Edmunds, punched in the $15-25k and it turned up things like Mercury, Ford, Chevy and stuff, hell no. The Si seems like what I'm looking for, similar engine, similar power curve, and a LSD FTW! The normal Civic is in no way an option, my RSX spoiled me, I need more than 130hp.
My RSX is in no way a luxury car. The Acura badging was just something to differentiate a performance Honda from the regular Hondas. I think at least, I've read similar stuff in places. If I were buying an RSX for the Acrua badge I'd be getting ripped off. Am I right?
The Si would be an upgrade! Four doors, better seats, a LSD, better suspension, better ride, there are more things too. The leather seats in my RSX suck, take a corner, you better be holding on to the steering wheel, the seat is like a slip and slide! The seats look super cool when you see them, then when you sit in them you start to wonder "is this the same seat I was just looking at?" Why would a car company make a seat that only raises in the rear and not the front too? Hit a bump in the RSX and hope your teeth weren't touching, wow. Get above 30mph and you have to yell to have a conversation with the person in the car with you. Whenever you stop at a light you think "how the hell did the radio get so loud, and why are you yelling at me", lol. I'm about 6'2" and while the seat in the RSX goes far back enough that I can only touch the pedals with my toes, the wheel is only tilt not telescopic, what’s up with that? I think that the Si is better in all of these categories. Its what I've read and what some of you guys have said.
As for price I bought my RSX for 21,3?? before tt&l, I got a quote for a brand new one for 21,442. The used one was just down the road from my house, and the new ones were ~1 hour and ~3 hours away respectively. I read way too many Car and Driver, Road and Track, and Motor Trends before I bought my RSX, it was an extremely emotional buy, that's super bad thing. So in this price range there are no comparisons.

You are absolutely right. It's good to hear an RSX owner say that too. Leather doesn't make it a luxury car. The Civic EX-L comes with leather and you certainly could never call it a luxury car. The RSX is actually less 'luxurious' than the 2006+ Si.

Leather seats crack and fade. Also, they get hot in the summer, and they are freezing cold in the winter if you don't warm the car up. My friend has an '04 type s, and my car sounds better (exhaust), handles better, has a much nicer interior, and my stereo sounds better than his Bose. Performance in a straight line is a toss up.
On a side note: I was going to say that the Si doesn't have a telescoping wheel, but I realized I never checked, and didn't want to provide that information, without knowing for sure. So, I went out and checked, and it does have a telescoping wheel. Woohoo! I can't believe I never noticed that before. LOL. I guess I just like the driving position so much that I only ever needed tilt. Anyway, thanks for making me go check.

You are absolutely right. It's good to hear an RSX owner say that too. Leather doesn't make it a luxury car. The Civic EX-L comes with leather and you certainly could never call it a luxury car. The RSX is actually less 'luxurious' than the 2006+ Si.

If that's the case, Acura wouldn't have existed from the beginning.</TD></TR></TABLE>
It IS an upgrade... they built the 2006 Si to REPLACE the RSX until it s redesigned (if it gets a redesign). Better motor, better tranny, better chassis, better interior(my opinion on this, and I HAVE HAD BOTH), better price. The ONLY thing I haven't liked better in my Si compared to my Type-S is the sound while driving... the RSX is quieter, but then again, I'm also riding on 16inch wheels with R50 tires instead of 17s and R45s... maybe that has something to do with it?

The paint chips very easily. My front end is completely speckled with rock chips but the rest of the car is mint. Invest in the 3M clear bra if you buy the car. I wish I would have.
There's the 3rd gear issue that you're probably already used to.
The windshild is HUGE and attracts rocks like a magnet. Mine has a crack about 4ft long and im reluctant to spend the $500 to replace it because I know it will just happen again.
My interior doesn't rattle at all.

No prob 2008fijibluesi. I read it in a magazine, hey haven't I said that before? I'm already emotional about this car and I haven't even driven one.
Yeah I was afraid that I would get attacked by some haters, I'm glad someone agreed with me about the Acura "luxury" status. Acuras, unlike other "luxury" brands, have always put performance first. The current trend of squishy luxury cars offends me, I read that Acura wanted to more directly compete with Lexus by taking the performance edge out of their products to make them more "civilized." If they do that they're gonna sell less cars then they already do. I would never buy an Acura for luxury, I buy for performance, that's what Acura was originally about. Acura Integra GSR, Acura NSX, ring any bells? Acrua was formed because Honda believed that Americans wouldn't pay more than $30K for a "Honda."
Great googally moogally Demonis, you say the RSX was quieter than the Si, that's not a good forecast. Is there anyone else who's noticed this?
EmoHatch the RSX's window isn't "small" either, I feel your pain. I've got plenty of chips but no cracks.
Ugh, yeah I'm dealing with the 3rd gear issue, I took it to the dealership and they put it on paper, with the Acura header and watermark, that the problem was with my foot not the transmission, I was so pissed.
I wanted to get some of that 3M plastic to put on my RSX because during love bug season the guts will eat the paint right off, and etch the metal! I didn't know where to get the stuff or have it installed though.
How do you quote someone? I'm used to vBulletin powered forums.

just cause the si replaced the rsx doesnt make it an upgrade. the only thing the si has better is that it comes with an lsd but it also has the 3rd gear problem the rsx has, so how is the tranny better? everything else is just opinion. the motor is pretty much the same as the 05-06 type-s. i would take the rsx exterior/interior over the si. i work at a honda dealer and we get rattle noises cause of the plastic covers on the dash. both cars are nice but it really comes down to which one u like better.

im probably going to get hated on for this being its my first post but i have an 07 Civic Si Sedan and i love the car. i actually test drove a few RSX's and they felt a little to cramped for me. overall the car was quick and alot of fun but i realized i needed 4 doors. i also test drove an Si coupe and was basically set on buying till i literally saw a flatbed delivering a black and galaxy grey Si sedan when i was at the dealership. keep in mind this was my first Honda so i didn't even know a 4 door Si existed. i test drove it and was sold immediately. i may be biased as im accustomed to sedans as they are more practical for me with work and what not. i also have not had a single problem with the apparently common 3rd gear issue. seems like you either get lucky or you don't get that lucky. technically your upgrading from a 2 door to a 4 door if you want to say upgrade i suppose or classify it like that. if i wasnt moving i wouldnt be selling mine as i really love the car, i doubt highly you will be unhappy with it if you decide to purchase one. good luck either way.
I was actually between the mazdaspeed3 and the SI sedan back in October. You get a ton with the speed3, more HP, it's a little bigger...got a ncie size hatch on it. The overall interior is nicer. But Mazda wouldn't move from the price. So, I ended up with the 08 SI sedan. I absolutely love it. It's quick, practical, looks good for a 4 door. Good gas mileage etc....I don't think you can go wrong with either one, but if price is an issue, the SI is worth it. 3rd gear hasn't been a huge prob for me, and I almost have 10k on it already.
