strength, integrity. i would use DOM for a cage, if you could afford it, chromoly would work as well, but DOM will do the job nicely.

DOM is a process for making and finishing the tubing, not for what material the tubing is. ERW is not something you would want to use as it's not nearly as strong, mild steel or chromoly.

So, 'fabtec', I believe you are confused. One should worry if the tubing is ERW or DOM, not mild steel. They are two separate arguments.

My cage is mild steel.

From NASA CCR:
http://www.nasaproracing.com/rules/ccr.pdf
15.6.18 Roll Cage Tubing Sizes
For the purposes of determining roll bar tubing sizes, vehicle weight is as raced, but
without fuel and driver. Note: There is an allowance of minus 0.010 inches on all tubing
thicknesses. Minimum tubing size for the roll cage is:
Up to 1500 lbs.
1.375” x 0.095” Chrome-moly / Seamless mild steel (DOM)
1501 - 2200 2500 lbs.
1.500” x 0.095” Chrome-moly / Seamless mild steel (DOM)
1.500” x 0.120” ERW* (No issuance of log books for cars with ERW cages 04/30/03)
*Note- Specifications listed for reference for inspection of grandfathered vehicles.
2201 2501 - 3000 lbs.
1.500” x 0.120” Chrome-moly / Seamless mild steel (DOM)
1.750” x 0.095” Chrome-moly / Seamless mild steel (DOM)
1.750” x 0.120” ERW* (No issuance of log books for cars with ERW cages 04/30/03)
*Note- Specifications listed for reference for inspection of grandfathered vehicles.
3001 - 4000 lbs.
1.750” x .120” Chrome-moly / Seamless mild steel (DOM)
No ERW allowed.

Called Jeg's tonight to see if the tubing was DOM or ERW. No confirmation yet, as the guy with the answers won't be in until tomorrow morning.

Seeing that the NHRA and IHRA do not call for DOM tubing, I doubt that the Jeg's roll bars/cage is. Also, there is no provisions for ordering CRX or Civic roll bars/cage in the '88 to '91 category when the two are clearly different.

It's almost definitely ERW, and thus illegal for any roadracing type stuff. Since HPDEs follow the CCR, it would be illegal for that as well.

Jeg's is not bolt-in. If you're going to be welding anyway, you might as well get a custom cage, IMO.

As for AutoPower cages, it really depends on the application... I'm completely happy with the one I have in my 944, but I know people who have not been happy with their fit in Hondas and Acuras.

Dude.

DOM is manufacturing technique, not a meterial.

DOM we use in roll cages IS mild steel, as is ERW. Even CDS is going to be mild steel if we're building roll cages out of it.

Pretty rare to see 4130 Chrome Moly in a roll cage, as it has to be heat treated after it is welded.

But likely this cage material (which is legal with NHRA but not NASA, SCCA, ICSCC, etc.) is ERW. 1 5/8 is pretty common for ERW, and is real common in NHRA stuff.

Not going for looks just for safety. Just thinking about road racing and maybe some daily driving. So I guess the autopower is the way to go if I want to be nasa legal?

Well skip the Jegs cage for sure--most cages by drag racing folks are using ERW.

I personally wouldn't consider an autopower, any bolt-in style, or a cage designed to work with a stock interior.

Safety Devices I think makes a FIA kit for the EFs, might be a good option. Otherwise custom fab is the way to go.

Some of this has been covered before.....

1. JEGS cage kit is not DOM.
2. NASA and SCCA will be requiring weld in very soon. Next year?
3. Daily driver and safe roll cage do not belong in the same sentence.
a.You cannot wear a helmet on the street, so you will smack your bare head on a
rollbar, even if it's padded it is going to suck.
b.Added weight sucks mpg.
c.Getting in and out with "safe" door bars sucks.
4. Drag race rules call for a slightly different cage design. Most have no diagonal
bar, but a straight across one, and the support tubes go to the floor, not the shock
tower.
5. Club racing tech leaves ALOT to be desired IMHO. Often, they might not "see" the
difference in design, and they definitely would not get into the type of material...

I'll quit now before this thread heads in another direction.....Good Luck.........

Sorry to hijack this thread. But if NASA goes to weld in will that mean that I will have weld my bolt in cage or get a new cage?

You can weld your bolt in cage.
