Default Camshaft specs...what do is all mean?

I know the basics I guess. But in detail, what does everything mean? The amount of lift...how is that measured? How much is too much/little? What does the duration mean? How is that measured? Too little/much? What's the best profiles for different types of motors:daily driven, race, etc.?

I just want to get this straightened out. I want to completely understand it all, so to make better choices when modding my car.

Well obviously, the longer the duration the better.....I.E. HKS 272 Degree cams are a Supra hot item.

I am also thinking the higher the lift the better.....but, what about overlap.....that is where a lot of power is and where the DOHC's beat out the SOHC's.
