Default Chill Out!

It seems as of late that all the other forums have gone to hell due to a select few that ream people for what they post. I also feel that the "attitude" is working itself in to here. Please everyone just chill, if something is wrong, kindly tell the person they're wrong and attempt to correct it. We don't need smart-assed remarks and witticisms all over the place. It is one thing if you are joking around, but there is far too much hate involved anymore. We all love going fast in hondas (most of us), can't that be enough of a bond to make this forum a friendly place to chat?

I understand where you're coming from. But what if I was the kind of guy who for instance contributed to the hub and stud thread by urging people to use red loctite on their lug nuts. Further suppose that I resisted all explanation of why that would be a bad idea. Then go forward a year or so and find me doing it all over again. That is where my "attitude" comes from. I have seriously reflected on why I even give a ****, and have given due thought to Catch22's decision. Since there has been a reduction in my give-a-****, I've chosen to take it another direction: I ream a select few idiots (when they post dumb ****).

I like to think that this forum has one of the best signal to noise ratios that i've seen out of alot of mailing lists and message boards. I think its a ton of fun and very informative, and only rarely do people's attitudes show in their posts - and even then its very mild.

I'm just curious, mike - where did this thought come from or are you just too damn bored at work?

Besides, posting "chill out" threads such as this is more detrimental to the 'atmosphere' than just letting people be as they are (you wont change this) and mellow out..

Ditto, but that doesn't mean that we have to be jerks to the uninformed and confused that might wander in here. There is a huge difference between "check your users manual before you take advice about using red Loctite on your lug nuts" and "go fo' it, you stunna punk beeotch but don't be takin' it on Jerry and cryin' and all that if it don' work out..."

Oddly, I think in the year or so I've been here, I've seen it get a bit less agressive.

Either way, I think the board is excellent, as one of the few places where info is freely shared by competant individuals with the ability to largely self-police themselves. That's a community... but communities (or even families) don't come w/o discipline, squabbles, and responsibility.

Die lawyer scum...

Anyway, I'm generally fine until get bored and wander in to another forum. It just enrages me.

Right this second, the first post in the EG forum is: 92-95hatch, with 96+front end?

It enrages me, and is the very reason that I should avoid forums all together. There is a huge difference, however, between newbie and dumbass but it's often hard to distinguish between the two...

This is exactly my point. And opening up another thread on the matter to vent the issue further, well, IMHO, isnt helping anyone. So, for all of you that are reading this.... maybe we can be a little less abrasive to n00b questions instead of "take your car back to the shop so they can work on it you damn stunna!"

We are here to learn, and for those with experience, teach at the same time

Think on that.

i think this is my first post in roadracing/autocross... most of my time is spent with the other "stunnas" in the integra or classified section. not the appearance/cosmetic section like RJ and jmu1337 like to think. i havent been a member for too long, but all in all i think this board is very open and receptive (of course with exceptions)

I rarely post in this forum, although I've been visiting more and more as I get more excited about learning how to drive my car well. I really don't know any of you guys very well, so my comments aren't directed at anyone in particular. Frankly, the reason I don't like to post in this forum is because I see so much hateful witticism and spite flying around, I half expect someone will bite my head off for making a less than accurate statement, or for asking a "stupid" question. I was raised to believe that "the only stupid question is the one you don't ask." Well, that kind of attitude will get a guy drawn and quartered in this forum. Yeah, the other forums have their fair share of egos and critics, but there are just some downright hateful people in this forum. I wish that wasn't the case because there probably isn't one of you 'regulars' that couldn't teach me in some way to be a better driver.

"I was raised to believe that "the only stupid question is the one you don't ask." Well, that kind of attitude will get a guy drawn and quartered in this forum."

And that is indeed sad my friend. There was a time some 747 days ago that I recall reading this forum (this is the only forum I have ever posted in minus a random post here and there) regularly and thinking "sheesh, these guys are so damned smart they surely are going to laugh their butts off at any of my moronic questions." I won't say it was a life in Eden or anything of the like but seemingly, there were Senior folks and there were Junior folks and there was a threat that you would get called out for being one of the latter and being wrong. From my memory, a lot of the same personalities (not persons) were around then. I distinctly recall that asking a question here was more highly protected than answering one without the technical acumen to do so. I find it funny just in the last two or three weeks how many people with little to zero racing experience whatsoever have corrected people with a minimum of 5 years professional/national/regional w2w racing experience. I think - although not a Shangri La, that was a bit less likely to happen here a year ago than it is now.

The typical flow I recall then was -> question was asked -> Junior dude answers correctly -> Senior dudes say "yep you got it right AND here some more info" or "yep, sorta but REMEMBER when you blata blata. . . " and that was one scenario and that seemed to be the overwhelming majority of the time.

Other flow was -> question was asked -> Junior dude runs out of theoretical talent and gets ripped a new one for thinking he knew what he was talking about.

Personally, I thought it was kinda cool. The local talent kept the up-and-coming talent in line. Some of the same names here now were around back then but I swear those numbers have dwindled steadily (can't remember names right now and I've never been good at saving posts).

I do not now nor have I ever touted myself as anything more than somewhat experienced with a buttload more to learn before I feel like calling myself competent. I think however that there are a ton of folks that feel with terribly limited experience they may pass off information as sole-source and in my humble opinion, if I don't trust myself to do that with my experience, I surely don't respect it from someone to whom I am vastly more experienced.

Basically, the way I remember reading posts here, virtually noone had a post count of 2, maybe 3 posts per day, noone seemingly gave a rats butt if someone broke 1000 posts. Post whoring seemed to draw some nasty barbs from the established public. Hell, even the moderators had very low post counts and from my memory very little to moderate. The whole name calling thing was virtually non-existent - mostly limited to the example I gave above. I don't recall the whole kills mentality nor do I recall the bazillions of follow up posts like thumbsup and beer and cocktail and whatever following a post - Geez! people would actually take the time to say something complimentary to the poster (I haven't seen someone do that in probably a year now) if it was a well written response. Ironically, I don't think there were nearly as many problems here then as there are now.

Sooo, now that I just waxed rhapsodic for 27 minutes and assuredly no-one gives a damn and the best I can hope for is or "power to your mother" or something similar, at least I know I gave it a shot. I spent a couple of minutes before this thinking it would probably do ME good to sit down and write this as I am nostalgic for 747 days ago.

Peace!

Damn Adam... From day one some odd years ago when I first read one of your posts, all I could think of was "damn, this guy has some education".... You write in such a fasion that I can bearly understand it, I am simple minded..

Either way, I "think", somehow, I am involved in your post, now, weather I am a senior or junior, I don't know...

Something that's a far more readily fixable issue would be-- What's up with the damn "SEARCH" function?? It doesn't seem to be nearly as powerful as it once was: you seem to not be able to search on anything that isn't the thread title or thread creator.. I know for a fact that you used to be able to search the body of posts and post creators, not just thread titles.. I can already easily review thread names and thread creators just by doing a "Find in page" with my browser on the forum index pages..

Why not just get rid of the SEARCH function altogether if it isn't providing anything? (hint: I actually want the more powerful version of the search back.. or if I'm just too stupid to understand searching, I want someone to point out where I'm misusing it..)

As for the attitude of the board, I guess maybe I'm just ignorant of it. I had posted in another thread that I had thought Ross a bit thin-skinned (ha! try and search for that thread! ) but hey, maybe he's just getting reamed in threads I'm not seeing, and so I don't know what's going on.. if so, I honestly apologize to you, Ross, for speaking in ignorance (not that I was trying to be hurtful before), even though I did _try_ to do a search to see what you were referring to..

Maybe I don't read this board enough to see justification for all these concerns, but primarily my main sense of attitude of this board has been that people are overreacting.. but then, who knows, maybe I'm part of the problem..
