Car: '97 civic ex coupe w/ stock 6 1/2'' door speakers
alright, ive never done this before but i think it would be pretty straight forward
tell me if this would work..
1. as far as i know, the speakers are able to just be unscrewed from the door w/o taking off the door panel? is that correct?
2. unscrew speakers, unplug speakers, snip off the connector that was in the stock speaker and then strip the ends of the 2 wires.
3. tape/butt/sodder the stock speaker wire to the new wire that came with the speakers
4. plug other ends of the new speaker wire into the new speaker
5. mount and listen?
does that sound like it would work?

1. Yes.
2, 3. No. Unplug speakers, plug in speaker adapter harnesses that are $6 a pair. No need to be ghetto.
4. See #3.
5. Depends. If the speaker is too big, or too deep, you'll need to modify (cut) the basket behind the speaker mounting surface in order for the new speaker to mount properly.

1. Correct
2. Correct, but you may want to disconnect the battery just in case.
3. Correct
4. Correct
5. Correct
On a side note depending on the depth of the speaker you may have to cut/trim the plastic of the door panel so that the speaker can fit.
All n all you pretty much got the idea.

Merged your 2 threads bro.
Remember your car takes a standard 6.5" speaker. Be sure not to get over-sized 6.5" speakers.
