Default R-compound shelf life?

a friend of mine get some discount with some 98 production R-compound, just wonder if that's all right to take the deal. Other than the older design (maybe), is there anything he should be aware of if getthing those tires? Any thoughts?

TIA,
CS

I believe R compound tires do have a shelf life, as I remember seeing a sticker with a date showing when the tire was made. I saw it on some Dunlop R compound tires in Hong Kong.

Sometimes they get rock hard, but who cares if this is just for driving schools. Run the cheapest tires you can find.

Go for it. They're not going to last very long once you start using them, anyway.

Just make sure they're not dry-rotted.

There is a shelf life, but I am not sure about the time frame....
