Default To shave or not to shave??

I am in the process of ordering new tires for a set of wheels I have. I am going with the Toyo R1R in 195/50/15, which is still considered a street tire. These are going to be primarily track wheels/tires used for HPDE. I don't plan to drive them much on the streets except for going to and from the track. The shop that I am ordering the tires from asked if I wanted to have them shaved. What are your recommendations as far as shaving? Should I have them done, or leave them at full tread?

Ryan...Why are you running 195's? You should at least pick up some 205's and maybe even 225's up front since you have flares. As for shaving, if all you're running is HPDE I wouldn't bother. Those Toyo's will last a while more if you don't...and if you're on a budget. I haven't and don't plan on shaving any r-compounds for HPDE use, but will shave the next set of r-compounds (on a second set of wheels) now that I'm running TA's and NASA TT's this year.

Hope to see you at Buttonwillow at the end of the month!

wat's up nick..

195/50/15 is the only 15" size toyo offers for the R1R. I also heard that the R1R's run wide for being a 195. These are for my del sol, as the EK won't see the track anytime soon.

From what i've read with competition tires, shaving actually increases the useful life of the tires. Now, would that apply to street tires as well?

and Nick, I am registered for Buttonwillow.

i think a while back i saw comparison pics of the 195 R1R next to a 205 RT615 and they were almost identical in width.

yup, i saw that too, and about 2 hours ago, i received an email from NASA stating they have a $100 rebate if you purchase a set of Toyo R1R or R888 from an authorized Toyo dealer. The shop I am ordering mine from is on the list of authorized dealers.

So now i need to decide if i should order them shaved or not...

no need for shaving if your in hpde1. heck, u shouldn't be using r-comps in hpde1. it'll only cover up bad habits.

Are you getting them through AIM tires? If so ask Ron what he sees most people do, tell him you are not after the fastest lap, just looking for good life.

I'd think at least knocking them down to 6/32nd might be nice.

R1R's aren't R-compounds, they are still street tires..

Ah...I was not aware they ran "wider" and that these were for the Del Sol. As mentioned above, 6/32's wouldn't be too shabby and you'd still get some decent use out of the tires.

Look out for some PM's coordinating the trip down to BW

Shave 'em. The R1R looks to have an exceedingly soft compound. It also has relatively small tread blocks and a soft carcass. That combines for a tire that squirms a lot. A tire that squirms a lot, gets hotter then one that doesn't. The hotter you run the tire, the quicker it will wear, the more uneven it will wear, and the greater your chances are for chunking the tires. With the limited data found on these tires thus far, they seem to wear very quickly even when shaved, so I'd hate to see how quickly they'll wear at full tread depth. Personally, I'd pass on the Toyo's and get some Bridgestone Re01R's.
