Default *Guys Please Help!! Car died today and its a timing problem...*

Hey Everyone,

After about a week of letting the car sit in the garage I decided to go out for a nice little sunday cruize today so I went out and started the car, came out of the garage and right on to the street. I eazed it into fist, second, third and fourth letting the car warm up a bit before I beat on it or got on it. I usually don't warm up the car in the driveway because I don't wanna **** of my neighbors so I just drive it easy and wait for it to get up to operating temperature.
But anyways I stoped at a light and about a minute later took off again easing it in from first to second and taking second up to 4k the car just seemed like it chocked itself out so I got off the throttle and it died on me... "crap"
So I pull over into a side street and think of what could have happened but while doing that I crank the car over again to see if it would start again and the car doesn't wanna start but the weird thing was that it turned over but there was no back pressure or nothing...

So I pop the hood and look around for a bit to find nothing really out of place so the next thing or actually the only thing that was left to check is the timing sence I had a problem with my gears sliping once before and doing the same thing I though that this would be the fix for sure.....
At this point I'm on the phone with a friend of mine telling him I'm broken down and need some assistance and tools...

After a bit he brought all the tools and I went to work, pulled out the plugs thinking one may have fouled but everything checked out ok, so I pull the valve cover off and look at my cam gears but they are still zeroed out so I turn the crank pulley to top dead center and here is what I found:

While the exhaust cam was at top dead center the intake cam was sitting 90 degrees advanced.
Now the timing belt and water pump were replaced when I pulled the head off to put in my headgasket and the tension up on inspection was normal and the belt looked like it was in very good shape (only being about 2k old) now I have thought about what might have happened to the car all day long but I'm completely stomped I don't know what it could be at all that caused this to happen...

Any suggestions with sence are welcome here, I'm gona tare into it tomorrow but what could have caused this to happen is what I don't understand...

Please help...

Adi

Did you type that right?? 90 degrees?? That's 1/4 turn on the gear. The only way that could really happen is if you sheared off the woodruff key the holds the cam gear in place.

Unfortunately Sonny that is no typo the gear is one 1/4 turn off...

See I when I cranked it over to try and start it again both of the cam gears were still spining but I guess with the woodruff key sheared the cam gear would still spin but the cam would sit in place...

By the way how does one of those keys really shear off??
