Default h22 leaking oil @ timing cover, what all could it be?

Bare with me guys, this is my 1st time pulling apart a honda - I picked up a H22 swapped 92 EH hatch. I noticed a drip forming from the front (belt side) of the motor and it's either comming from the oil pan, but more likley from behind the timing cover.

Other than the front main seal, what else could it be? I want to make sure I change everything that might need doing while I have it apart, cuz i'm sure it's not gonna be a fun job

The timing belt and water pump are only 3000miles old so I'm good there.

Lastly, where do I get a tool (clip) to hold the auto tensioner closed while I re-install the timing belt? Honda direct?

The most probably leak reason is a balancer shaft seal.

Thank you.

Anything particularly tricky about replacing it once the belts are out of the way?

It could also be the cam seals.

Yeah, you should be able to get one from Honda; I believe it's simply called the "stopper" for the tensioner. You can try replacing the oil pan gasket and re-sealing the oil pan with Ultraflange 2 also.

I had a similar problem, my oil pump seals went and started to pump oil into the timing belt cover. This of course happened 2 months after I did the timing belt, and had a balance shaft seal retainer installed.

OK, so just replace all the seals huh?

I'm praying there is room to tap the ballance shaft seals in place being this H22 is in a civic. It's hard to tell but If I pullthe oil pump off the front of the engine so the crank and ballance shaft seals come out with it? If so I can do the difficult seals on the bench rather than in the car. (i'm hoping).

Hey, my H23 is leaking past the main seal like crazy too. What is up with that?? I thought I had a bent crank shaft!! Is there a fix?? Cause i already replaced the main seal, and its doing it still, just oozing out through the main seal behind the timing belt gear. Help!!

Shandon, it is generally bad to jack someone's thread like this. Make your own from now on.

If you've replaced it already and it still leaks, you either aren't installing the seal correctly, aren't using the correct part(you're going oem correct? I hope so.), or you have a groove in the crank or a scratch somewhere in the seal hole.

I picked up a front timing gasket/seal set from Beck Arnley for about 12$ Now the question is can i do this with the motor in the car

I'm wondering if I can unbolt the oil pump and get the seals that way (off the car) - are the ballance shaft and front main seal attahed to the oil pump or underneath it, in theblock?

a main seal and a balancer shaft seal can be teased out with a screwdriver though in civic you have not so much place to operate it...

Does honda actually make it's own seals? Probably not I bet.

I think getting the seals out should be relititvly easy, it's drifing em back in with limited room i'm concerned about. Anyone confirm if they are in the oil pump or actually in the block?
