first off look for vins then look to see what its missing like distributor, alternator etc.... its pretty difficult to judge a motor that is not in a car obviously cuz theres no oil to look at or u cant tell how it runs but dont take the overall appearance of the motor as a bad thing, the motor can be covered with dust and dirt and can be in great condition and 450 is a great price (always take the year of the motor as a very important thing because the newer the better condition its in and less mileage most likely and a 98 is a very modern ls motor)for that longblock for that price im guessing it doesnt come with the dizzy cuz its a great price i would hop on that

If you are just going to tear it down you could try and find a blown B18b1 longblock. One that has spun a bearing, rod knock or blown rings/ring lands. You can usually find those for about 150-200 complete.

Once you tear the motor apart you will want to give it a light hone anyhow so might as well save some cash on that.

I have purchased 3 B18b1's already this past year to tear down

i'll keep that in mind. im buying it to use as a learning tool and to swap into my car too. so i want to make sure im buying a good motor that is not going to break down on me when i swap it in. so to double check a long block consists of:

block (obviously), head, dizzy, alternator, stater?, fuel rail, Throttle body, intake manifold, is there anything else im missing?

you forgot injectors and wiring harness... no the starter is not included in the longblock the starter is considered separate because it is attached to the tranny any b series starter will do.. and if the motor is stock its extremely reliable you dont have much to worry about
