so im trying to finalize my setup for my transmission to go with my 12:1 ls/vtec with pro1's (so say about 200whp)
ive got the lsd and am 99% sure im gonna go with a 4.928 final.
but im undecided if i want to go with mfactory's new first gear.
i have a gsr trans, so the first gear is something like 3.2 stock, the mfactory piece is 3.070, so in my thinking this makes a longer first gear and moves the revs closer to second gear correct? in effect making a pseudo close ratio 1-2? (there close ratio gear set uses a stock 2nd anyway).
look here and tell me what you think

at this point, since i have a deadline by which to get this trans together, and the fact that i need axle seals and new diff bearings i may hold off till next season on the first gear...
the 4.9 should make a pretty big improvement on its own i would think right?

It really depends on your application. If your car is purely for drag racing, or you do a lot of standing starts at the track, then you will benefit from a longer 1st gear.
However, if it is mainly a daily driver, then it is not a necessity
Changing to the 4.928 is very noticeable in itself.
Seeing as you were thinking of the Final Drive + 1st Gear, have you thought about using our Close Ratio Gears instead. Similar pricing, and you will notice a far bigger difference in 3/4/5 than with just a Final Drive alone

of course ive thought about the whole close ratio setup haha, but my bank account wont allow me to get it right now. im gonna do the trans in 2 stages most likely. so i can see the improvements.
thanks for the insight! youll be getting my order soon.

we had the best short times in our all motor hatch with a 4.9 fd and longer 1st gear if that helps at all.
But this was a track only car, cant comment on the street drivability of it . . .

Here is a vid with my JDM CTR using the Mfactory 3/4/5 gearset.

well its not a dd car anyway, so im not all that worried about the streetability. the only thing i want to keep is a good cruising 5th, so im pretty sure im gonna throw in an ls 5th for the like 300rpm's less in 5th while im in there.

We have very similar setups but I went with pro2's due to the fact I'm building a second motor which is bigger. I bought a s4c b16 tranny, obx lsd, mfactory 3.07 1st gear and 4.928 fd. Next purchases will be a set of 1-5 gearspeed synchros and a gsr 5th gear. You should get the 1st gear as well. It will help with your 60ft times.
Yes I am doing everything at once. I'm waiting on the synchros right now and a speedo gear. I would rather do it right the first time ya know. Putting that 4.9 in with a stock 1st gear is asking for traction problems.
Speaking from experience, i daily drive a bone stock gsr with itr transmission with stock lsd ats 4.9 fd and the ats 3.077 1st gear, it makes a hell of a difference from a dead stop, so for drag racing purposes yeah, i'd do it, but i'm loving the daily driving experience of my current setup but gas is a KILLER !!!!

Contact Walter Mckinney this is his phone # 304-692-2740 and website http://www.mckinneyraceworks.com/ He gave me a great deal on the final drive and 1st gear. Even on his website the prices are the best I've seen anywhere else. I spent about 20 minutes on the phone with him just bs'ing. He's a good guy who will answer all your questions if you have any.
long first + short 3-4-5 > higher FD anyday of the week. Pick the right gears for the gear set and it will work great for drag as well as track. Using the longer first with the gear set gives you a true cloe ratio box versus close ratio 3-4-5.
