Default Lightweight CRX for Road Racing

Ok so I know you can cut everything this side of the moon out of a CRX to lighten it for drag racing, but what about road racing and autoX....J's Racing has a CRX thats only 750kg WITH A FULL CAGE, and its great on the track. I've gotten rid of everything interior wise and i mean everything, just the cluster on the ground, steering column and single seat left over.

Anyone have any pictures of extreme weight cutting additions? I'm about to cut the spare wheel well out and weld in a nice thin square of sheet metal, maybe swiss chesse the rear bumper with a couple holes, but thats all i have right now.....

And if anyone has pictures of the J's spec CRX, that'd be great :]

Dont cut out the rear wheel well. Or if you do watch for the fuel tank lol. Theres a thread around here somewhere of someone who is making an EF hatch for autox...

Here it is, check this out:

Take out everything you dont need in the interior, basically all you want left is a cage, a seat, a lightweight custom dash and some gauges. Get a full carbon roof and replace all windows with lexan. Cut the impact bars in the door out. Replace the hood, fenders and hatch with carbon pieces. Run no exhaust or if you have too a titanium or aluminum one. Replace all 4 corners with lighter brake components/suspension components. Use the lightest wheels you can find, gut the engine bay, use a lightweight rad and remove all engine related components you dont need. Get a 6-10lb battery. Have all wiring redone (by Rywire.com ). Remove the mirrors, replace the bumpers with lighter ones and hold them on by zip ties, go on a diet etc
As far as cutting huge pieces of the car out, I would pass on that. I would imagine it would comprimise the structural integrity of the car and wouldnt be worth the 10lbs savings. Up here in Ontario, if I were pulled over by the police with holes such as that one, my car would be impounded and I wouldnt see it again...thats so ghetto

one more thing... alot of the stuff I listed such as carbon fenders and some of the lexan windows dont save much weight at all..... Those pieces weigh next to nothing to begin with

There must be a new, modern use of the term vapor lock that I've not yet heard...

Sounds good, yeah I'm in the process of swapping the windows and door side impact bars out. I like the zip tie the bumper idea haha, but with the drivers around here idk. I'm running open headers right now to reduce all that extra weight, no inpections down here in South Carolina, and the cops usually don't hassle me unless I hit VTEC while I'm passing them

Oh and I found some 13" wheels that are super light......should I stick to 15's so theres less sidewall to rollover in the curves?

lol I thought vapor lock was lost with the introduction of fuel injection! :D

I think you meant to say hyro lock.

I have a friend that has a 91 Si that is stripped with a 6 point cage, aluminum dash and a B16.
It tipped the scales at 1726lbs.
It will see some time at Sebring in about 2 months.

Thanks for the J's racing pictures, I'm still baffled by how they got it so light but I guess I'll just make sure and clean everything up and reduce what I can.....then go turbo :] Less boost to move less I guess

How much is your's weighing in at? A stock DX sedan over here weighed in around the mid 800's, so i would expect your gutted rex to be under 800kg by now.

I took it to a metal scrape yard and weighed it on their scale, which I don't believe is very accurate but anyways, it came up at 2050 without me in it. I've removed the entire exhaust since, so just headers, that freed up maybe 30 lbs or so, not sure, but nothing close to 750kg like I dream about ha

Something is wrong with the scales you went to and they must be loosing their *** paying for scrap. A stock 1990 DX CRX only weighed 2110. So unless you have filled your gastank with lead stripped out you should be in the 18-1900 LB range. And you have to remember glass weights a lot and look at all the carbon on that car 10-15 lbs shaved off here and there add up quick.

I understand you are doing a lot of this for the sake of just doing it, however, if you ever want to use your car in autocross or roadracing, most of what you are doing is illegal in almost all but a few classes in SCCA or NASA. So, if you ever want to autocross/roadrace, please retain all of your parts so you can put them back on for whatever class you choose to participate.

I find it silly that a car with that much work put into it still has the stock door panels

My 4th gen Prelude with a 8 point cage and NASCAR bars weighs 2190.
Gut the doors and glass, lexan, CF hood, HVAC, PS, do chromoly bumper supports, rip out the sunroof, wiring, etc.. whatever you have in your car you don't need it.
