econotig or syncrowave 200 ?
well its time to buy my first tig welder but iam not sure what one to buy i have about 2,500$ to spend the types of metal i will be welding are aluminum, stainless steel, steel i know how to weld steel but not aluminum ive done maybe 10 min of aluminum and i was just filling a hole i will also be making intake air boxes and cat back exhausts with this welding aswell at other random things (go kart or mini bike) my work get all of our gas filler rod and tungstin from alocal Airgas so i think i can get a good price out of them so do you guys think i schould just go for the syncrowave or is the econotig good enough for what i will be welding
Everyone says that, but I haven't had one problem with my Econotig, and I got it for 1K off Ebay.
That leaves you money for other things.
People always seem to say, buy the best machine you can afford. That would seem sensible enough, but honestly, I'm doing the same type things you want to do, and it's working out great for me.
Granted I have not welded with the sync, so I can't do a comparison between the two. However, for my limited shop time and projects- Econotig was the right choice for me.

since you want to weld alum i would say get the syncro, forget airgas.. buy it from http://www.cyberweld.com they have the runner package for $2035.00 out the door and shipped, they have excellent customer service too.
BTW: i am not affiliated to cyberweld ... i'm just a very happy customer

cool thanks guys for all you input yea i learnd how to tig on syncrowave and thats all i have ever used so i think ill stick with that ill be checking the sites you guys gave me thanks again
Econotig SUCKS! I'll sell you a Hobart TIG Mate for $750, same thing, if you REALLY want it. First problem is it kicks on at 28 amps, second problem is it doesn't weld aluminum for crap, not true "high frequency". Syncrowave is great! Down to 5 amps, good aluminum welds, just a little undersized for anything over 1/8" aluminum. You need pre-heat for anything over 1/8". A true aluminum welder is going to cost more like 6K plus, have a minimum of 300 amps and a water cooled torch. I'd say for your budget, Syncrowave is the way to go.
iam going to be getting the syncrowave 200 from cyberweld.com once i get my garage ready for it i need to build a good bench first and get a band saw and something to sharpen my tungsten thanks everyone for your input

He bring up a good point, if you can get your hands on a "inverter" type welder, they have superior arc control! Way better than an old school transformer type.

Have u looked into the lincoln 225? That may be another option. I was thinking of getting a sync 200 for home use but the only thing that scares me is that 60 amp service is recommended. The lincoln works off 40 amp service..
