I think my timing belt went! (stock 1990 Civic Si - 1.6L) Any suggestions??
I was cruising at about 40KMH, and all of a sudden the engine just shut down. I kind of heard a whistling type noise as if the timing belt broke, and the gears were spinning and touched the belt (causing the whistle sound). It sounds strong, like it wants to start. There seems to be spark etc. It happend late so I could no see or look for anything else. I will inspect the timing belt in the morning.
Can you guys suggest anything else to check.
Thanks in advance!!

Check for spark. I wouldnt turn the engine over with no timing belt cause the valves could hit the piston = not good
i broke the timing belt on my 90 si, just after i first got it. the valves never hit the pistons and i was driving it pretty hard at the time. you should be ok, hope so anyway.
Well, I took the timing belt cover off, and low and behold, the Timing
Belt is dead. It IS the problem. Any tips on changing this? is there anything I should look out for? Will it be difficult to reset the timing?
Thanks!!

i dont know exactly the proceedure. But im sure it isnt that hard to doo at all. There are marks etc for the timing on the cam gear. Go buy a new timing belt and someone here will post up directions for timing belt replacement
I am sure it's a big enough job. You would have remove one mount atleast, and raise the engine up, to get the new belt in. I dont have the tools for this, so I will be bringing her into a garage Monday or Tuesday.
Thanks for the input!

my gf's crx just snapped a timing belt and it wasn't pretty. i thought i could get away with just replacing the belt. I didn't even try to turn the motor over after it shut down. after i removed the head i saw that all the exhaust valves and some of the intake valves were bent except for 2.
i recommend you remove the head and change the timing belt and water pump while you are at it.
good luck

I agree with B_Cruz
Have your top end checked anyways, it's not a really big job, and relatively cheap insurance.
As for the timing belt, the basic procedure is to line up the cam and cranks at their TDC position, pull the engine mount and pulley, slide the old belt off (or let it fall out, either works) slide the new one on.
Check your water pump, idlers/tensioners and anything else that moves. It's not very expensive or time consuming when you do everything at once.
Good luck
