Default REX failed emission :( help?

Anyways took the REX in, failed emission

91 CRX HF stock everything (crappy hf motor ) had exhaust replace last year and barely passed

Anyways don't really want to dump any money into it (engine) just want it to pass emission this year then hopefully swap it this spring/summer

Anyways what must I have to do to fix the NOx? limit for NOx reading to pass was 2.0 and i got an 2.6248 Anyways don't know much about emission issues so need a little help with not a lot of money to fix it and get it to pass well let me know see if you guys can help me otherwise might have to pay up well TIA

air filter, spark plugs and check timing...that should do it if you aren't throwing any codes

nope no codes....timing/air just like PIE Damn didn't really want to touch the spark plugs might be nasty Will have to see how much that'll cost me hopefully not too much....hopefull coupe is not due for emissions cuz I need exhaust for my coupe (was trying to save for the apexi WS2 )

But the spark plugs can cause NOx, for it to failed eh? Ok..Again don't know too much about emission issues but okay will have to change that then...anything else? Thanks for so far

high nox is created from too much heat usually

I though engine should be at normal running temp. tho for my case it seems like somethings wrong with radiator-though damn thing looks new/rebuilt. I mean I had it running and then when it was hot it cooled off, took like ~5 min. or so but still cooled off...

damn don't really want a new radiator...I'll change the sparks and with not but if it'll cost me over $300 bucks to get it to pass I don't know

so too much heat what other 'things" would cause engine to create too much heat? What about engine oil? I've just been throwing in cheap stuff so don't know what that do to engine but seems to run fine....anyways any more info. let me know TIA

Dude were do you live in the midwest.

Just about last year or so they passed a law stating all obd1 cars and prior are exempt from emissons. (well were im at)

Now when they are doing your test are they doing the idle test or are they putting the car on the rollers?

If they are doing the idle test ask them if you can go on the rollers instead. idle test is much harder to pass.

Brew City ???I didn't hear anything....nawh went on the rollers...guy tried 2X....was thinking I should just skip the failed and take it to another place but then if I fail again be a waste to go and wait/ then getting it fix though I might try to take it to a diff. place and see what happens otherwise get it fix...freaken waited almost 2 HRS before I went on

assuming nothing major wrong with the motor, plugs and an air filter are cheap (like $2 each for decent plugs), and check the timing. maybe clean the throttle body, that has helped me in the past. these are very cheap fixes and don't take much time. just make sure the engine is cold before you do the plugs, like in the morning before you've driven it

yeah thanks... i know those are nothing major...but I thought I go and try again and guess what! Freaken this time i got a 2.4! down TWO from 2.6 and 2.0 to pass and guess what i did to it. NOTHING yet so that's just freaken weird...I went to a different place from the first one I went to....???so i don't know

But anyways times a bit short due really soon(this 16th) I'll do the plugs and filter by myself but going to get it a dignostic for $40 and see the fix (how much$) then gotta fix the brakes on it as well which I don't mind just don't really want to throw $200+ on the stock engine but anyways thanks man...guess i'll change the oil on it as well it's due anyways too so yeah...but thanks man

OH since I'm on emission....

I have a 2nd REX now that one is swap (stock LS header/exhaust w/b16 j1 tranny?=P) going to have to change exhaust to my sp2 or take out test pipe...anyways haven't registered it yet but when I do and I have to go for emissions....Do I not say anything at all to them and just have them test it or what? Engine is from a '96 LS converted to OBD 1...also would I stay in the lane of "95 and older" or what? TIA

-change oil (heavier weight)
-check plugs are gapped correctly
-check plug wires
-check oxygen sensor
-run it on the highway before test
-fuel injector cleaner
-advance timing slightly (1-2*)

good luck

Hmmm. There are alot of not so good advisors here so I have to butt in.

First of all you are not that far off so what I would do is a de-carbonize treatment like seafoam and run it into the IM only.

Check your timing. You want to retard the timing to lower Nox.
Example: If your timing spec is 16btdc set it to 14btdc.

If you don't do alot of freeway driving. Drive it for 1 hour without stopping. This will clean out the cat and make it more effective. Then go for the test.

This is what I would do

The way you said it makes more sense to me than change this do that which is good too but so my timing is really the problem to fix the NOx then eh? If so I will do that and I should be good to pass then to you my man

I thought if I have it too hot might not be good as well don't do too much freeway driving so I put the heavy foot on it in the streets before I go to test don't worry not city streets HOPE the timing will fix the NOx so that would be lower setting right? THANKS man

So can anyone help/answer me on my 2nd REX??

I would have to know the laws where you are at to tell you. I don't know what tests they would do.

Here in CA we have to have a bar ref certify motor swaps that are not the original motors for the car.

Google your DMV or what ever you call it and see if there is any info for you to go off of.

Fixing the timing and changing some things here and there tomorrow and hopefully it'll pass, then come summer the engine has got to go...thing's got 180+K on it and it can use a new clutch and a lot more TLC on the engine so not really worth it to fix it up, rather swap/upgrade so yeah...hope for the best after the fix

As far as the google DMV I did a little searching and then the emission/VIP place but didn't really get anything on what I'm looking for.... so I figure I ask here because most people on HT has a Honda that's swap/ modified so one might know...though if it's modified NA/turbo etc. it'll have to be registered else where because it'll never pass emission that I know...

But not sure on how to go about with a swapped Honda that's just swapped and not so modified....anyways any info. would be GREAT otherwise thanks and will post results after fix

High Nox = Faulty Cat, change the Cat and you will pass.

Good luck!

Last min. i was told that. BUT I only did some fuel inject. cleaning, change oil, idle, few other things that were also needed and really needed new front brakes replace bad But that's all I did so I'll take it in tomorrow and hope for the best And if I fail them yes I will have to freaken change the CAT on that %$%$# which I didn't want to cuz the exhaust and cat was just replace last year or not even a year yet! and I don't plan on keeping the exhuast system longer-looking forward to a swap hopefully this spring/summer so yeah BUT thanks man could've use that info. sooner? But it's cool

I'll post if I pass or not

And the guy that did my smog check didnt want to do it when he saw under the hood He said " I cant do it , The Filter is Illegal and you have no Cat" i said well the cat is under the car not in the hood. and second of all the filter is not illegal. he said well let me see what i could do. After it passed he was surpriced.
but if u want it to pass just change your Spark plugs and wires. The Zc i had before the one i have now didnt pass.
