What is the purpose of the 2 large metal center console / dash bars (brace)? 92-95!

I received a PM from a member asking why I still have the black tubes in the car. Anyone know what purpose they serve as?

The car is completely stripped down so if it's another componet I don't need..... out they will come

Looking at the bar on the drivers side. There are 2 studs on the brace that connect to a bracket which secures the steering column. I don't know how you guys are completely removing these for that reason. But, what I am thinking is I'll cut the brace just after the steering column studs to remove the part that runs to the center console.
I'll post some pics later this evening of what I am referring to.....
