Default Tranny problems(kinda long SRY)

Hey guys just posting to try and help out a friend of mine...

Ok he has and 2003 Rsx base auto. He drives the car like a manual ALL THE TIME. The car now while driving in either "D" or tiptronic will somtimes nuetral out and just free rev, then kick back in gear then out again. Now the acutal light on the dash that indicates with gear its in does not change it stays the same. Then the D light will start blinking and trigger off the CEL. He never scanned the car. He called me and told me that the tranny is gone in his car and he ordered a different one($1400). I drove the car and realized that nothing is wrong with the acutal tranny more of the solenoids on the tranny. Of course when I drove the car the first time it drove PERFECT. But when I got back in the yard it did it, CEL came on and everything. Now on the tranny I can see 2 solenoids, one on top and one on the front side. I unplugged the top one and started the car and No gears would select. So he ran along a bought both solenoids, top and front installed and Boom same problem... He then took the car to a mechanic shop, (transmission Shop) when they told him that the tranny is shot. They pull the tranny out and rebuilds it and put new Performance clutches in it (LOL)$3700... Put it back up and then the car would not shift out of 4th... They pull it back down, do whatever and put it back up.. Back to square 1, the car does exactly what it did when it got there. They then told him there gonna replace the enitre tranny, did that and put it in and Boom SAME DAM PROBLEM.... As of today they took the car back and told him now they are gonna get a new ECU and program it for the Performance clutches they put in(WTF)can they??... What the hell could this be???

Since he put the new solenoids in I have not seen the car since(hence to check over his work) but its pretty straight forward... I told him right after he put the new solenoids and call me to tell me the bad news to get the car scanned to get the exact code BUT I don't know what the hell is wrong with him..

Damb this is long as hell.... Sorry guys.
But have this ever happen to anyone else?? Let me know

How in the fcukin world can they put a performance clutch in an automatic? Did i read that correct? Someone please make sure i'm not reading **** wrong here. After they would of said something like that i would of NOT paid them **** and took my car from them because they have not the slightest clue on what the hell they are doing. On top of that if i took my car to get fixed, i would of said fix it to stock not add performance **** to it. By law what they did was illegal. They can not put anything or add anything you did not ask for to be put in. They have to notify you or the consumer first. It's part of the FTC (Federal Trade Commsion) legal laws. Protects consumers for **** like that.

Programming the ECU just for a tranny to work LMFAO..... Tell your friend if he likes to throw money around for people saying random **** then give me money. I'm pretty sure the "mechanics" which i wouldn't even call them that told him they needed to replace the muffler bearings cuz that's exactly what they are doing to him. Tell him to add more lube cuz he's getting SCREWED in more ways then one.

please tell him to take it to a real certified mechanic that has worked on or knows about automatics and or imports.

My whole thing is why did they not scan the car in the first place???

Lets keep this going..

no they don't they have torque converters. If they had clutches then try replacing the throw out bearing or at least find it.

They can't just "add" stuff and hope it fixes the problem cuz it sounds like exactly what they are doing.

those are "clutches" but aren't really considered a real clutch. They are a bit different. Call up any shop and ask them for a cluctch in your automatic see how fast they laugh at you.

Ok, your stating all that I already said.. The shop put upgraded clutches in the tranny!! I laughed when I heard this because its a BONE STOCK AUTO RSX.. no need for it.. but at the end of the day AUTO TRANNIES HAVE CLUTCHES.

Bump for a solution or someone else that had the same problem..

Did they even tell him they were going to replace the "clutches"? Did they even tell him they were upgrading the "clutches" to performance "clutches"? I can't even think of one company that actually makes performance "clutches" for an auto. Usually they replace the whole torque converter to a higher performance torque converter but i don't even know a company that makes a performance torque converter at that for the rsx. All in all what it boils down to is did they get permission from owner and notify the owner they are upgrading? If not then they can not "add" parts fix other **** without informing and consent from consumer. It is illegal.

There are 5 shift solenoid valves on the tranny. There seems nothing to be wrong with any of the 5 clutches in the transmission. You're buddy got played. A damaged clutch will not throw a CEL. There has to be something electrically wrong being either one of the solenoids. It could be the shift lock solenoid, one of the many solenoids on the tranny, atf pressure switch, or even the ATF temp sensor might be bad. I have no idea why the hell your buddy didnt get the CEL checked out. He just got 4900 bucks and flushed it down the toilet cause its probably a 100 dollar sensor or solenoid that is bad.

I totally agree with blueshark. It has to be something electrical becasue even with new parts it is still haveing the same problem. Good luck with the fix.

Don't forget to double clutch it like ya should! haha

Check out diagrams and the reference numbers and you can see how many there are. They can be bought in sets or alone

O they also told him that the clutches were also GOING bad on the car so they needed changing soon anyway... I think thats BS to just cover their own ***...

ok another update guys..... My buddy called me today to with Finally good news.. He love how the car drives, smooth no noise and the Performance clutches they put in are noticeably different. So after work I go straight to his house and test drive the car. I'm driving it in the tiptronic mode and shifting normal. I get on the on ramp and floor it, climbs through the RPM range nice and smooth reaches redline and i up shift, the gear actually grabs pretty good, feels like going from a worn stock clutch to a stage 1 clutchmaster or exedy, I was shocked. 2nd to 3rd and on felt like normal though. But the car drives like normal again finally. After about 15 mins of on and off hard driving I'm driving back to the house. I get to a stop sign then move off, as i'm going I slide it back over to "D" and guess what, it gears up and stays in fourth gear, tries to gear down and starts free revving again, CEL and everything.BACK TO SQUARE 1 AGAIN...

So I asked him what did the shop do... Then he gives me the list. They changed "ALL" the solenoids, changed the ECU, changed the fuse box ... The fuse box part have me in ???.. I asked him for the work order. On it I see that they scanned the car and got code p0778roblem in A/T Clutch Pressure Control Solenoid Valve B Circuit..

so I'm looking at the link that blueshark123 gave me http://www.acuraoemparts.com/d...8B%29

That should be it right?? I would change that one but he's giving the car back to them tommorow... He spent a total of $3700 so far.. He returned the trany he bought first..

Meh, **** happens no ones perfect. Human error wasn't paying attention to the plural. I'm still trying to figure out what company makes a performance clutch for an automatic rsx.

OP:
Sounds like your friend seriously likes to throw money away to tech shops that do a "Guess and fix"

Did they just replace all five shift solenoid valves? If so they scammed him again because judging from the CEL one (B) of the three A/T Clutch Pressure Control Solenoid Valves went bad not the shift solenoids. However B and C come in one piece. Part number is 28260-PRP-014. I have a picture that will show you but I dont have access to photobucket or any other photo server for that matter. This is the best I can do but your SOL unless you have a k20a account http://www.k20a.org/forum/atta...96953
