Default Shaking Problem

I have a 97 GSR. Whenever I take off from a complete stop the car shakes really bad, like its going to die. After it takes off its fine. Alittle after that started happening I noticed that its been much harder to shift into gears, like I have to push much harder. The last thing is a rattling - grinding noise coming from under the hood. Is this cluth related. I know its most likely the tranny. Any suggestions??

Engine mounts are ok.

tranny and the shaking could be the fuel filter, do u have low idle like the idle drops to like 500 rpms or lower?<~~that would be a fuel issue.

does it do it while no stress is being put on the motor? like can you sit in your driveway and rev it up and this happens?

no. only when you take off. Shifting into gears is getting harder and harder. It revs up fine. No power loss either.

I heard that if a flywheel is too light it tends to heat up and wear out.

Does anyone know how much it costs to get it replaced from a shop?

your clutch is toast, that is exactly what my gsr did a couple days ago. when it was pulled apart some of the metal had sheared off by the spring area from hard launches and a POS clutch the last guy put in there. susatained high rpm driving can also take out POS clutches. something lose or misaligned also can create issues since the clutch is a rotating assembly. i've heard nothing but good on exedy from both the import and domestic guys so i went with their stage 1 clutch kit for $290. shops locally wanted $250 + $35 flywheel resurfacing for the labor side of things.

I bought a clutch and flywheel from ebay about four years ago. Im dont remember what brand it was but it was about $250-290. It doesnt have more then 50K on it. The problem happened from one day to the next.

How long did you have that problem before you fixed it? And did you have a griding metal sound?

Your flywheel does not 'wear out'.

An excessively light flywheel can make it more difficult to start from a dead stop. Sometimes you have to give the engine some extra revs to get it going.

Your problem sounds like your clutch needs replaced. If you got by 4 years with a cheap clutch kit before, I'd say save your pennies and do it again.

one of the guys stated that Exedy Cluth is pretty reliable. Any other brands I should check out?

If the clutch is the problem, does that explain the grinding metal noise?

mine did the weird sounds also, what caused it was a piece of sheared metal wedged between the disc and pressure plate. thing kept flinging around in there. i went with exedy mainly because of the long life i hear about these things delevering. the stage 1 is good to something like 270hp or so which is a lot more than i'm making. i also considered centerforce but didn't want to spend 500 bucks. what i didn't want to do is be inside doing the job again in a year or two. i looked at f1spec and the light flywheel kit on ebay, fidanza makes GREAT wheels but i have no idea who f1spec is. thought it all through and figured the exedy stage 1 was a good move up from stock. will handle all the mods i plan on doing and was affordable at $290 for the whole kit. even a real OE fuji carbon is better than some no name. remember the clutch spins like mad at 8000rpm, i damn well wanted to make sure i had something that would take continued high rpm use. track days are comming up soon

DO it. It's like getting NGK spark plugs; get Exedy, nothing else. You will be happy and it will last a long time.

I had a stage 1 Exedy, it felt like stock, but then again it pretty much was. I've always liked Clutchmasters clutches, Only one I'm not fond of is an Action clutch (what i currently have). . should have bought a clutchmasters

Thanks for the feedback guys. Looks like ill be getting an exedy stage 1 clutch after I take out the transmission. I just need a cluth to last me another 3-4 years or atleast through college.

Off-topic does Tein just sell shocks. I have the Tein basic and its pretty worn. Time to replace. Or can I put the Tein springs into some other shocks like Skunk

Tein sells coilovers and springs. You can put the tein springs onto other struts just like any other spring.

Probably because Daiken-Exedy manufactures the OE clutches.

well, at least they used to, I'm not sure if they still do.
