Default I GIVE UP tps problem

I give up and need your help guys. I have a D16y8 that is converted to OBD1. I have no CEL on at the moment.

I'm sure I have some sort of TPS problem. I get the loss of power thing while I'm cruising on the highway and the "bucking" too. It's very consistent every 5 seconds it will buck and then clear out, then buck again. Only at partial throttle too. I've recently replaced the TPS with a new Blox TPS. I've adjusted it properly .45v closed and 4.5v WOT. Everything seems okay for the first 6-7 miles of cruising but it eventually does the "bucking bronco" thing. Seems like after it gets warmed up it acts up. Now I'm driving with the TPS disconnected and it runs fine and only have a low idle with it unplugged.

Could the TPS plug be bad?
Bad TB?
Improperly adjusted throttle cable?
Bad ECU?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Jeremy

whats your engine set up and your ecu? loose throttle cable can be inspected by just looking at it.
a friend of mine who is using blox tps, and he seems to have the same problem too. the idel is always at 1000 rpm. not sure if it is blox. he is still trying to look for an oem.
but i dont think tps will cause bucking bronco thing. it is just tells computer how much fuel and air to apply when throttle is fully closed or opened

yea my car had been sputtering and bucking for a while to. So i tryed unplugging the TPS sensor and it runs fine just idles a little higher.

I am just wondering why your car would still be doing that after you put a new one on. O and j/w how much was it from Blox?

Just a d16y8 with a Crower stage 2 cam and a chipped P28 ecu. This setup has been working without a problem for two years.

"Bucking bronco" my sound a little harsh. Basically I will be cruising at partial throttle then all of a sudden no power what so ever. Step on the peddle a little and it will go back to normal. Back to partial throttle and the cycle repeats.

I only paid $15 for the Blox TPS on eBay.

You've adjusted it so 0% and 100% throttle check out, but did you verify linearity between those points? No sudden dead or flat spots as throttle increases?

That's what I'm thinking too, that I have a bad spot somewhere. I only have a digital voltmeter so it's hard to confirm this. If in fact there is a bad/flat spot would it be the crappy Blox TPS or something else?

Thanks for the bump guys.

I just went out and see if I could find a dead spot, but I couldn't find any. The voltage increase steadily as I open up the throttle.

It's not the wire because if I disconnect the TPS it runs fine.

Still sounds like a sensor to me... not mechanical like the throttle body or throttle cable. You said Blox TPS... did you mean Blox throttle body? Did you unplug both your TPS and MAP recently? Maybe swapped them?

I just got the Blox TPS not a whole throttle body. I have a used OEM lined up. If I can't get it sorted out in a few days I'll buy it and give it a try.

Definitely didn't swap the MAP and TPS.

i recently had a similar problem but i had a TPS code. althrough i had no bucking, it was my throttle body gasket... i had used gasket maker in addition to the oem gasket (just to make sure) but the gasket maker caused some air flow issues so i cleaned my TB and problems went away... how do ur grounds look? dizzy in good condition?

I have a collection of TB gaskets and use a new one each time I remove the TB. I have cleaned the TB once which was about 6 months ago. I don't know how I would go about checking the condition of the dizzy. I've replaced the cap and rotor recently.

Hmmm grounds you say? I've always had a hunch that my grounds were bad even before this problem came up, due to the fact when I turn my head lights on the rpm go down a few hundred.

check em, replace em... their not that expensive and there's not THAT many main ones...

edit: i think everyones rpms go down when u turn your headlights on, think about what powers your headlights

If my grounds were bad, should my car run fine with the TPS unplugged? Because it does and only thing bad is a real low idle. It idles at the first mark on the tach.

Well, this morning I thought everything would be all good. The previous day I adjusted my throttle cable so that it idled back when I removed the stock TPS and replaced it with the Blox. With the idle good I readjusted the TPS once again and then I reset the ECU.

Fast forward to this morning. Car stated up good and I was on my way to drop off my son to day care which is about 4 miles away. All was good UNTIL I slowed down to take a left, the rpm dropped way down like it has been. Dammit I really thought I had it fixed this time. Dropped myson off and headed out and it began the usual loss of power thing.

Bog, clears out, bogs, clears out blah blah. So I got sick of it and while driving I shut the car off and turned it on again. Drove to the gas station to get some pop and everything was all good except the annoyingly low idle again. Everything stayed the same until I got to work.

I am a lost. I guess I'll continue shutting my car off and restarting it until I figure what the heck is going on. I'll be getting a used OEM TPS today. Hopefully I get it in the mail before this weekend.

If anyone has anymore ideas please let me know. Until then I'll keep this thread up to date.

If you tested the signal from the TPS and it checks out, then replacing the TPS won't matter. The ECU doesn't know what brand it is... simply what voltage is on the middle lead.

If you drove around for a day with no TPS plugged in, would it be fine minus the low idle?

Sorry things are still going bad man!

bump up for more ideas for a fellow ej8squader and for the fact that I'm going through the same thing with my b18b swap.

Let us know how that oem tps works man. I have personally been asking around locally about Blox -vs- OEM and EVERYONE I talked to said go with a OEM......New....or just run to the local salvage yard and yank one off quick.

How about checking if your throttle plate is fully close and the throttle cable is not too tight. You see when you push the throttle plate to WOT, you see where it stops? If there some kind of mark, your throttle cable is on too tight causing it to smash on it and knock the plate out of place. Adjust the throttle plate bolt making sure its fully closed.

You know what i mean when your car running on and its flucutating and you go under your hood and push on it to close not to rev it up. If it changed idle then bam thats your problem.

Correct I've drove without the TPS plugged in a few times and yes it drive fine. Nice normal smooth acceleration, but with a very low idle.

Thanks for the bump Brad.

at first i thought it was my plug wires so I replaced those. Also my car is turboed so I bought new spark plugs 1 step colder and gapped them at the right specs. After that it still sputtered, so i checked out the cap and rotor and they looked great. After that I was stumped, so i just decied to run it with the Tps unplugged- and now it runs fine. I also cleaned the throttle body as well. I havent cheacked for dead spots with a voltometer yet. I am thinking about just getting a hole new throttle body from a junk yark or something with all the sensors on it..

but at least for right now I dont have to deal with the sputtering when the throttle is half way open lol.. just the annoying check engine light for TPS being unplugged.

I know how you feel about the annoying check engine light starring you in your face. I hate it.

I'm going to try and check the TPS while the car is running. Like d[sick]sTeena said my grounds maybe bad and causing a lower voltage when the car is running.
