Turbos and ITBs Passing Smog In California???
Can someone please tell me how people (specifically in California) manage to pass smog with turbos and ITBs that are quite clearly NOT CARB legal??
I am always reading in magazines like Honda Tuning about guys who live in CA and have these crazy motor setups and yet they clearly have license plates and reg tags.
Is it just a matter of finding a shop that will pass you for the right $?? Or am I missing something??

Ive wondered this as well. Im guessing if you have that kind of money to drop into motor work, you pay a little extra cash as well to have an inspection sticker slapped on.
Another reason may be related to what we have here in NJ, called a "collectors car" inspection sticker. Acquiring this sticker allows you no car no emmisions check (or general inspection either) but you are only allowed to clock 3000 miles or less every year or so when you go back to have it renewed.

Its never cheap and its never legal. Smog guys that do this charge for there time and possiblity to get busted. Its more of a need to know basis. But if they get busted by a cop its alot of trouble for them and they usually go back to stock for it.

That shouldn't be too hard, I'm sure some of those guys even trailer their cars to the hard-parking events.

Yeah, the edelbrock passes but I am not interested in either of these kits. I would like to go Full Race, custom turbo, or an all motor ITB setup but I know for a fact none will pass smog legally.
I dont want to install a setup that I really dont want just because it passes smog. Im not someone who wants to go around polluting the air more than I should but I dont thing a Full Race setup is going to pollute any more than Greddy or Edelbrock, its all about the CARB # on the kit. So Im willing to look for loopholes.

Pardon the (maybe) stupid question, but what causes ITB's to fail smog? Is it strictly visual or does it affect emissions as well?
btw, you only have to smog your car every two years. One of my friends smogged his GSR with the stock B18C1 and then right after that swapped it out for a Spoon B18C. No need to bother for another 20 months
